Is Gen2 worth $30k to $40k difference over Gen 1

I enjoy my EVs for what they are even if considered "old tech." For me, not even $5k would be worth ditching my R1S Gen 1 for a Gen 2. Suspension, if better on G2, I find it very good and quite comfortable on my G1. Matrix headlights, sure, nice tech, but to me it is rather gimmicky. Auto high beams on my G1, and on my Teslas works just great also, does an excellent job as it is. Whatever else better on G2, nah. ADAS or lack thereof on my G1 is perfectly fine for me as well, borderline don't-care.
These are computers on wheels. Computer technology is ever improving, advancing. Even if G2 is better, G3 will obsolete it and G4 will do that to G3, and so on. And so upgrading becomes an effort of getting the latest tech for the sake of it only. Trying to stay current with technology is a battle nobody can win unless you have gazillion $ to fritter away.
Will enjoy my G1 for years to come. It will be just as awesome years from now as it is today.

I compare the Rivian purchase to my Tesla purchase. I still have my 2016 Model S and after all of the upgrades Tesla put into their cars, I’m still quite content with the one I have. I’m sure in 6 more years I’ll be saying the same thing about my R1S.

It is similar but the OP is asking opinions on a purchase, a low mileage demo G1 or a new G2. Asking if the G2 is worth 30k more on the purchase.

I humbly suggest that you simply drive your Rivian and enjoy it to the fullest as is. Vehicle will power down as needed and do so totally transparent to you and wirhout you having to do a damn thing.
Should you feel inclined to do so as time goes on, do delve into the worthless (my view) world of minutiae, chaff, totally trivial bull hints and means of doing so many things just to save a few stupid electrons. Shut off this, shut off that, heck perhaps even how to disconnect the battery pack altogether. On and on and on.

Just enjoy your awesome vehicle for crying out loud.

It's why leasing is the only way but unfortunately wasn't offered when I got my R1. They'll struggle to sell Gen 2 R1's at that high price point going forward. Rivian trying to convince Gen 1 people to upgrade to Gen 2 dual-motor with crappy leases is laughable.

Now that I do not just glance at your post, since I’ve seen, and will see, many iterations of the same subject. Yes, I would buy the latest and greatest.

in this case, the camera system, superior computing power and the matrix lights would be enough to make the purchase. Aside from the possible future enhancements a G1 Riv might miss out on.

In the end, it is a personal decision, even though feedback from actual owners can help with the process.

My pre price increase Gen 1 '23 Quad was
105.670k Vehicle and accessories
15,987 taxes
Total 121,657 CDN

A Gen 2 Tri motor (similar performance to the OG Quad) same paint, same off road options/accessories
188,075k Vehicle and accessories
65,514 in taxes inclusive of 17,000 luxury tax
Total 253,589 CDN

Canadian taxes suck, don't get me wrong, but just looking at the difference between the clear bargain my Gen 1 was, vs the 131k additional cost for what amounts to a few improvements, and a couple downgrades, It would be a difficult financial pill to swallow/justify.

Really curious what would happen with my GAP insurance should my R1T be totalled. My GAP coverage is good until March 2030.

You'd still get 5 years of warranty and 58,000 miles left. A comparable new tri- motor. ascend interior, max pack and all the new bits. $103k roughly. I guess Dune is closer to a flat $100k but not wild about the color.

Tri Motor will have slightly more punch than the Gen 1 Quad but not 30k difference. I would only go with Gen 2 if you're wanting the Quad and want to spend top dollar.

Short answer, absolutely not.

If you already have a Gen 1 you got a the long time ago pricing I would keep it and drive it until R2 or the next gen of R1 comes out.

If you are looking for an R1 and debating Gen 1 used vs Gen 2 I would say that the R1S may have slightly improved suspension but likely worse stereo in Gen 2. R1T should be fairly close to the same so go with the Gen 1. I have a Gen 1 R1T dual motor performance R1T and a Gen 2 R1S Tri Motor and the Gen 1 R1T has better sound and better suspension. The cameras are better in Gen 2 but certainly not worth 30-40k more.

The driver assist in both are pretty bad so that's a wash. It really depends on what you're looking for....

Buy the Demo Quad and put that $30k - $40k money saved towards the R2 or R3X down the road.

If you have to have the latest and greatest—and money’s no object—then sure, grab the Gen 2. Otherwise? It’s not even close to being worth the jump. I’m holding out for a real generational leap: major improvements in battery tech, efficiency, build quality, and maybe a dash more luxury.

For those of us who locked in early pricing, we scored R1 Quad Launch Editions for $65K. These trucks have been phenomenal. Like I’ve said in other posts, I’m planning to run the wheels off my R1T. I even went all in with an extended warranty to 130,000 miles—this is my ride for the long haul.
