Is the ride improvement, matrix headlights, and improved cameras worth a $30k differance between a 2023 demo gen 1 Quad large pack with less than 2k miles. You'd still get 5 years of warranty and 58,000 miles left. A comparable new tri- motor. ascend interior, max pack and all the new bits. $103k roughly. I guess Dune is closer to a flat $100k but not wild about the color.

If you were buying today what would you do? assume you could afford either.

I think it depends if ADAS is important to you. There are a lot of changes under the covers including fewer CPUs, less wiring as well.

My personal opinion, I have an early 2022 R1S with almost 38k miles on it. I’m fine with how driver+ works on trips which is the only place I use it. I would not trade mine in on a G2 even if it was only a 10k difference. So my humble opinion, I’d save the 30k and go with the demo. A side benefit of the demo, it should be well sorted if there were any production issues.

Sorry to reply with a question

How much value do you place on future enhancements that a G2+ might be capable of vs a G1?

Do “we” have an FAQ yet?

Definitely NO for me. $30K will buy lots of new toys (or 1 big one).

R1T or R1S?

It's all relative. Is a 4c diamond worth ~$100k? I'd say no but I know someone that would say yes. The above listed upgrades might be worth it for some and not for others. Then there's the whole opportunity cost issue. What could/would you do with the $30k?

I went through this about 8 months ago. My answers is the used Gen 1 quad setting outside my door. The new truck is a better truck. Absolutely! There are also some things I like better about the Gen 1 truck such as mechanical door handles. I like normal AC rather than a heat pump, as normal AC is more efficient in hot temps (>85F). I am in Texas and it was in the 90's today.

While the Gen 2 truck is better, I'd say the Gen 1 is about 90% as good as the Gen 2 when comparing similar models.

I am not worried about Driver+/ADAS as I am using Comma which is better than either autonomous driving option Rivian currently has and does stuff that likely Rivian will never do.

So, would I buy a Gen 2? Yes, but only if the price wasn't much more than what I could sell my Gen 1 for. I might drop another $20-25k for a Tri max. The only things I really appreciate from the Gen 2 are matrix headlights, the quicker acceleration of the Tri motor variant and launch mode. If I had an R1S, I would also add the improved suspension on the Gen 2. They seemed to improve it a lot more. The R1T seems very similar to me and I like how the R1T Gen 1 rides and drives better than any R1S, regardless of generation.

My thought process back in February, when I bought a 14 month old 2023, for about 35k less than new, was that it definitely is not.

In absolute terms? I don't think so. I had my Gen2 in the shop for a week and had a Gen1 loaner. After getting used to the fuzzier cameras and the fact that the drive stalk doesn't pull toward you for the Driver+ feature, I felt the ownership/driving experience is really 95% identical. Which is a good thing, IMO.

The thing is, unless you're buying used, which includes a lot of other factors, Gen2 is the only game in town now, and we're in 2025, with 2025 pricing. The folks who took a chance with Launch Editions and lower Gen1 pricing got a GREAT deal for the risk they took supporting a brand new car company. But today, if you're shopping for a new EV, the prices are what they are.

We have a 2022 R1T and love it, but it's at the service center for leaky shocks and disconnects. We have a Gen1 R1S loaner, and frankly the suspension is not great. I probably would not get a Gen1 R1S for that reason alone. Our R1T feels so much better. My 2 cents.

I would upgrade to gen2 if the price wasn't too much. I wouldn't pay 30k for the upgrade. Maybe 10-15k would be the most.
