Went to my local Discount tire for rotation and they were having trouble getting the pucks lined up. Apparently, DT has instructed stores to remove the nipples on the pucks. Has anyone seen/heard about this.

As an aside, they didnt feel comfortable doing the rotation and were very nice about it.

Remove the nipples on the pucks?! That sounds like a recipe for disaster. Can’t do a tire rotation? What kind of tire store is that? I can kinda see the issue, if one is only doing a 4-tire rotation requiring the entire vehicle to be lifted AND there is a puck problem.

I have one mounting point that is a little tricky to get a puck seated, as the plastic cowling is not properly aligned with the puck mounting point. I’ve heard of other having this issue. It may be necessary to trim the interfering plastic back a bit.

I was just up for rotation and didn’t even bother taking it to DT, who I generally love. Tesla gets rotated there, but just didn’t feel good about the Rivian. Just did it myself

I had tires put on at Discount Tire in Colorado 2 weeks ago. They used the full puck. However, one of the 2 techs started to jack the car at one corner without first taking off the cover until I intervened with a loud "STOP."

EDIT: Just to clarify, this is not a slam on Discount Tire. I have been using them for 14 years and won't go anywhere else. My local shop in Colorado has always provided outstanding service. This was a case of a simple mistake made by a young trainee. As soon as I said something, the experienced tech came over to that side of the vehicle and pointed out to the trainee, the proper technique. I did not walk away upset with DT. Mistakes happen.

I have some magnetic pucks from Amazon. Had to remove the O-rings to get them in. I may be wrong but I think something changed on G2.

Never heard of such. But I do vaguely recall someone saying their car had a hole that wasn’t quite aligned with the circular port, thus making puck alignment difficult. Could that be it?

It can cause damage to the frame if the alignment is exceptionally poor, but the vehicle could slide right off without the penetration of the hole, especially metal on metal.

The right front under-vehicle protective panel on our R1T doesn't align perfectly with the jack point. The operator needs to tolerate the puck being a little out of vertical when the puck is inserted. As they put the vehicle's weight on the lift, the puck shifts just enough to bear the weight safely.

Portland Service Center was able to adjust the panel enough to avoid danger and to reassure Costco the vehicle is safe to lift from all four quadrants, including the right front.

That sounds like @Singletracker's problem, but adjusting the panel is a different solution than trimming it.

I can believe an individual Discount Tire manager, faced with a similar problem, might have foolishly removed the puck nipples. I prefer not to believe it's company-wide policy. However, since @Discount Tire suspended participation in this forum several months ago, I don't believe we have any practical way to tell.

Even though Costco now has its own pucks, and I trust my Costco, I always leave my JackPucks where the Costco staff can see them. Good workers deserve good tools....

Best wishes!

I saw the puck without the nipple too last week, used by America’s Tire (aka Discount Tire) here in SoCal.

I actually removed the plastic panel so that they can lift direct from the designated lift point, but DT’s SOP is to use their jack puck and lift one side at a time. They were able to lift the fronts without issue but they asked me to put back the plastic panels for the rears. Their 3 ton floor jack does not lift high enough and their puck kept sliding. They end up removing the plastic panels on the rears lift points, then use another block with the “nipple-less” puck directly under the lift point on the frame. I maybe their first R1S because they were not familiar with lifting it.

They left a copy of their “how-to” raise Rivian vehicle guide, see below:

This scenario is exactly why we had to create our jack point identifier epoxy dome emblems (silly to even have to make these), but your scenario has happened countless times now.
