Looks like it ripped off both Ford and Toyota with styling cues. That’s the biggest problem with China cars. They look like they blatantly copied the homework assignment and that bothers me.

The fact that China doesn’t respect IP law and steals from other countries makes all their stuff unattractive to me.
Still waiting for American companies to rip off China EV's charging rates.

Most Americans don't even know Rivians are American-made.
Rivian would see a huge benefit if they put "proudly made in the USA" or something similar on the rear.

My neighbor recently asked me who makes our Rivian. I said Rivian and she looked very confused.

LG = Lucky Goldstar, that's pretty silly too, I'm guessing it meant something different in it's original language?
I was super curious so had to wikipedia it ...

LG Corporation was established as Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Corp. in 1947 by Koo In-hwoi.[4] Its first product was "Lucky Cream", the first Korean make-up cream.[5] In 1952, Lak Hui (락희) (pronounced "Lucky"; now LG Chem) became the first South Korean company to enter the plastics industry. As the company expanded its plastics business, it established GoldStar Co. Ltd. (now LG Electronics Inc.) in 1958. Both companies Lucky and GoldStar merged to form Lucky-Goldstar in 1983.

So, it was "Lucky Cream" + Goldstar, and after merger, became Lucky Goldstar. Then, ultimately for the western folks - "Life's Good" as a tagline, but not a company name.

I was headed down to south Houston today and found myself driving for about 15 minutes next to a new BYD Shark with Mexican plates (presumably from the factory down there). It was the first time I had seen one in person, and being in my R1T it was an interesting side-by-side (at least while driving). We were both stuck in a traffic jam so I got plenty of opportunities to see him from lots of angles.

In any case, very impressive. Almost identical in size to the T. The Shark is a little bit narrower and I think a couple inches shorter, but very comparable. With 60 miles of electric range, I think this PHEV would do exceptionally well in the US if it were ever allowed to compete here (it won't be). It sure underscores the challenges Rivian and other US manufacturers are going to face when they venture outside the wall of protection. At a top price under $50k in Mexico, it it going to be super tough to compete. Very impressive, at least from the next lane over!

Looks good from the rear but like a Frontier from the side IMHO. R1T is much better looking.

Even if it's made of 99% Chinese parts but assembled in North America.
I see what you did there. I certainly hope 99% of Rivian parts aren’t made in China.

If they are, I guess we’re all suckers for paying twice the amount over a BYD.

Chinese companies may steal to bootstrap an idea, but in the Year of Our Churros 2025, they do that to catch up but then get way out in front, very quickly. There are extraordinarily talented engineers over there. This is not 1995.

We're so cooked on EVs it's absurd. China is beating our ass like like a drum right now, and it's not even close. I hope Rivian, Lucid, Tesla keep the pace up because they're kind of our last hope for innovation in the US. Certainly can't rely on Ford or GM. I don't even consider Chrysler / Stellantis American anymore ... (cast your hate, Jeep owners - I'm one of you, too)

FWIW, BYD sold 40,000 vehicles in Mexico last year and targeting 80,000 - 100,000 this year. For Mexico and Central / South America, I would put money on BYD becoming the leading OEM within five years and mostly with local production.

Boastful isn’t part of Rivian brand DNA. That’s the other brand. I prefer Rivian’s modesty.

As for your neighbor, can’t fix stupid. All it takes is a quick web search to know Rivian.

And many of those engineers were educated here, while fellow classmates were more concerned about having a good time.

Agree most Chinese car designs lack refinement. But not all. Take a good look at NIO. If they could sell their cars here, Tesla is toast.

Everyone steals. Some just don't bother covering it up.
No non-Chinese company steals to the level China does, because they get sued. China doesn't care, and even encourages, its companies to steal from others. That behavior is banned in the West. Of course, it still happens, but there's at least some recourse for it.

Ah so car companies buy and dissect competitors’ cars for fun? Mazda and Toyota once benchmarked BMW’s 3, a few generations of it (decades). GM benchmarked Ferrari during Corvette development. Ford benchmarked Ferrari also, during Ford GT development… twice. Nissan benchmarked Porsche, for GT-R. Ever noticed hint of Mercedes and Bentley over at Genesis?

Ford’s Farley had a stroke and didn’t really confess to driving around Detroit in a Xiaomi SU7?

No one is innocent. Everyone steals. It’s been going on for decades.

Rivian settled lawsuits from Tesla for poaching.

Pop the bubble and look around. You won’t die because of it.

Benchmarking is different than direct copies of designs.
