So I took delivery of my R1T 3 months ago and it didn't come with the manual tonneau cover like it should've. After almost 3 months of poor communication, I finally received it 9 days ago. Went to remove it so I could haul some furniture and the cable broke.

It's absolutely both hilarious and criminal that they charge $1800 for this.

Yup, when they first started delivering them there were a ton that were broken (both in their original shipping boxes and from this weak point). The forum was all a flutter. Hoping they redesign that soon. I’ve babied mine, so no problems yet but it’s pretty silly I can’t let anyone else touch it!

This has been a problem since day 1 and I don't see they have changed the design even a little bit. I flinch every time I pull on that cord, expecting it to break?

Yikes! That's really a poor design and some cheap manufacturing to boot. Obviously a warranty fix, but annoying to have to do that on a brand new PTC.

I had to wait six months for my tonneau cover, which was installed just a little while ago, Thanksgiving week. It's only been cycled a few times, but from your photo, it's easy to see how fragile the system is.

Interrobang cover is the way to go for manual tonneau. Simple, yet super practical. Looks OEM too
Believe me, I wish I could! I'm leasing my truck and the MTC was included in the options list. If there was a way for them to change the lease deal to remove this piece of junk tonneau cover, I would. But I'm paying for it one way or the other.

This was literally the first time that the cable was cycled ?

I installed it 9 days ago and it hadn't been messed with since then.

That thing was junk since we saw it. My OG power tonneau was much better that that. I don’t know what Rivian was thinking supplying crap like that.

Sorry to hear yours failed.

Mine has been on and off about 150 times in over a year in many different weather conditions and still going strong.

Still waiting for the powered retrofit to be available since wasn't when mine was delivered 2 years ago.

On a [hopefully] more pleasant note, I see you are in Utah, one of the best places in all of North America. We visit often and will be there yet again in late Feb for a few weeks of skiing, mostly in the Wasatch Front areas but occasionally ranging north to Snowbasin or one of the Back resorts. Give me a shout if you ski and want to meet up.

@babs89 I feel for you and your situation is extremely frustrating. The Tonneau Cover has been an unmitigated disaster for Rivian, both manual and power.

I waited years and then had to put my reservation on pause because they pulled the power cover from production and told me I wouldn't be able to get it if I moved forward. Then they slow rolled putting it back into production and at that point, I just gave up and reserved an R2.

I think as others have said 3rd party is the way to go. And yes, it is criminal that Rivian is charging $1800 for a manual cover that needs to be handled with absolute care to prevent it from breaking - sometimes even before you even get it in the mail.

Good luck!

Had some faith on my early ā€˜23 that their manual option yet to be revealed would be the power tonneau configuration minus the power.

Mine hasn’t broken and am a little salty that the power (v2) upgrade was $500 for some time this year when it came back. ?

I am amazed that these tonneaus are still being delivered with this same design/material flaw. It simply boggles the mind. I mean, how difficult would it be to make that weak link out of metal or any more durable substance. Just FN crazy! I actually have one of these. Iā€˜ve put it on and taken it off a half dozen times, with no issue, so far ? Other than the fear of it breaking, I am very happy with how easy and quick it is to install or remove. It’s a shame that such a lame component can ruin the whole thing. I’m half tempted to put some Super Glue on that part as a preemptive measure. Or, maybe glue a couple of metaL strips along the top and bottom of that shaft for support. I’m going to have to take a close look at mine to see what can be done. This doesn’t seem like rocket science, to me.
