Heard a pop today on the freeway and tire notification popped up. Ended up towing the vehicle back home. Was going to tow it to Americas Tire to see if it can be patched or if have to get new tire. I called Rivian service and they are going to send mobile service next week to check it out since my service center appointment isn’t until next month. I have about 7500 on these Pirelli tires. Just had the R1S for half a year. The Rivian service support said they will determine if there is warranty. I am hoping the rims are ok since I heard the pop and wanted to get to a safe location off the freeway. Kind of missing run flats that I had on my old vehicle. Can I replace one tire if it isn’t repairable due to the low mileage?

Anyone use Perelli warranty before? Do they prorate the usage or is there a chance the tires could be defective?

OEM tires do not have tread life warranty. However, they do have manufacture defects warranty.

Bummer about the flat! Hope your rim is fine.

If your tire is not repairable, then the option of replacing just one tire will depend on how much tread life is left on the others - just like any other car.

Given that we don't have run-flat tires on these vehicles, you might want to buy another rim, replace two tires, and put whichever one has the most tread life left into service as a spare. That could save you the hassle of ever needing a tow truck again.

I had a rim to rim blowout on a rear tire-Pirellis with 7500 miles. Fortunately my wife had insisted on us buying a spare soon after purchase.
At the SC I waited 4 hrs but it was replaced for free. I had video from the inside recording. Not sure if they looked at it, but I told them about it.
Since the spare was new it worked out that I have two sets of similar (but different) pairs.
I hope you’re treated as well as I was.

I don’t think the R1S has a full spare tire that you can put in the trunk. They have a compact spare tire but it’s out of stock. Rivian did tell me that they offer complimentary flat tire support where they come out and swap out the flat with the compact if you aren’t familiar or comfortable doing it yourself. I’m trying to find a video showing how to use the tire repair kit. I wasn’t going to attempt it for the first time in the dark though. Anyone try it before?

Also, I just looked at the tires. Rivian says they have to look at it but they might be able to patch it. If they are able to patch it, is it a short term fix, meaning I should eventually replace the tire or is it good as new. I just don’t know if a patch is a short term fix. EV with regen braking can last a long time on tires.

Looks like a very easy DIY fix, could use this or similar:

Are plugs and patches both needed? According to Americas Tire, you have to plug it so you prevent future water intrusion and then patch it. You have to do both. According to Rivian, a patch should suffice because plugs are only temporary fixes and plugs might not hold long term.

Do you guys know if the compact spare tire has a mile limit? I.e. after driving it for 100 miles, you have to get a new one.

A patch repair (remove tire and patch from inside) is preferable to a plug repair, but done correctly, a plug in that location should be OK.

That picture looks like there is a bulge in the sidewall. At minimum that tire should be removed from the rim and inspected to make sure its safe to drive on. If there is no other damage and patch/plug combo system is the best way to correct.

Rivian specifically told me they only patch, not plug tires. They said the tires will not hold up to a plug due to the weight of the vehicle. This was told to me by a Rivian tire tech during a mobile service tire rotation.

No reputable tire shops will plug tires. They only patch. However, what Rivian said about holding up when plug is BS. I plugged one of my tire and driven for 10k miles with no issue.

yeah, this tire is done for. OP definitely ran over something that caused the puncture and broken belt.

With how much tread is left, a plug will solve your problem - a few dollars from HF or Amazon and wait a few months.

While no reputable shop will use a plug, I have been told before that the plug is all you need by the same shops.

Broken belt? I hope you’re wrong and everyone else is right. Don’t most nails go through the belt?

Ok good to know. They also want $120 to do this repair. Americas Tire told me that patching is not enough. They will also plug to fill the hole so water doesn’t go into it and ruin the patch. They will plug and patch. I’ll drive it there once the mobile tech puts on the compact spare tire for me. I also read that the liquid tire patch will make the tire unrepairable due to the sticky glue so only use that as a last resort.
