We have a R1S purchased in March 2024. I started noticing problems driving in the rain in the summer. The vehicle would seem to slide around a lot. My husband noted the tires looked worn at 7,000 km and we made an appointment to have this checked out. We couldn’t get in until late Oct for a service check initially. We then had a water leak from the HVAC system and they toed the vehicle in Oct 1.

Eventually the leak was fixed and the looked at the tires and pronounced them unsafe to drive with. We were expecting a new set of tires and we wanted All Weather tires not All Seasons which are not legal on some of the roads here after Oct 1.

Apparently, there are no snow rated tires for 21” wheels and Rivian doesn’t warranty the existing tires. They said that is through Pirelli but Pirelli says they don’t warranty tires on new vehicles, Rivian has to initiate the warranty claim.

So far, I am very disheartened by this whole experience. I really liked my vehicle but the thought of having to replace my tires every 5,000 km is horrifying.

I'd call that strange wear unless you're burning out every stoplight. What mode do you usually drive in? Conserve can be a tire killer

Something is out of alignment on your vehicle...but the 21s do wear faster than the others, no doubt.

21s last 15 to 20k miles along as you don't use conserve. Mine are at 5 or more at 15k miles.

I was in Vancouver yesterday! Love the city! Saw 4 Rivians during my short 3-day stay. 10kkm is about 6kmiles, so that is concerning unless you were driving in "conserve" mode the entire time. I would nicely continue to escalate with Rivian.

Living in snow country, this falls under the heading of due diligence before ordering your vehicle. This is not Rivian's fault.

Best option for you... purchase some 20" take offs (wheels someone took-off their Rivian and replaced with different wheels) and equip them with proper winter tires. Those 21"s and the 22"s are not fit for winter driving.

Here's a good thread with 20" Winter Tire recommendations:

The 21’s suck, I got rid of mine and went with 22’s with Michelin defenders and they wear much better. As far as not being allowed to drive with those tires in winter that’s on you. If you live in an area with tire restrictions you should buy vehicles with the correct tires or plan on replacing tires accordingly.

Take your vehicle to a local tire shop and have the alignment checked at the height that you normally drive it. Mine is all purpose and low. My first set of 21 inch tires lasted 17,000 miles and then I got the alignment and my second set will last twice as long. Just so you will know, different heights on the suspension changes the geometry, and will cause tire wear.

EVs are heavy. EVs have lots of torque. Add on top of that, variable height suspension (and resulting changes in suspension geometry and potential for uneven wear), driving habits and a degree of user-error (like not following tire rotation intervals)... None of this about tire wear should come as a surprise to anyone who considered what they were getting themselves into when choosing a 7,000+ lb vehicle, capable of sub 5 second 0-60 mph and has variable height suspension.

As others have said I would have your alignment checked. Also drive in all purpose as much as possible. My 21 inch tires lasted 41,000 miles so they are not bad on all Rivian's. I drive mostly in all purpose and only launch when I am demonstrating the power to someone who has never been in an EV. Also I live in flatland MN and the tires do fine in snow here. My only gripe is I seem to get more tire punctures which could be coincidence.

The only non-Pirelli 21s for Rivian are : MichelinDefender LTX M/S2275 /55 R21 116H XL BSW
They are all season, as well. After wearing out my Pirellis at 20,000 miles, I bought some 20" wheels from Atomic Wheels and I am now on the Goodyear Wrangler Territory made for Rivian: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Wrangler+Territory+AT&partnum=76HR0WTATXL&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&autoMake=Rivian&autoYear=2024&autoModel=R1S&autoModClar=275/65-20
Bought these as well for my 22s!!! They are AWESOME!!! They run very well, great tread life and do well in winter weather! Pirelli needs to go back to the drawing board on those tires! Good luck!
