Just watched this video, apparently Toyota denied warranty claim because of this.

Now I’m curious about Rivian’s policy.

All of the info is here. It's too extensive to post.

They collect, use and share all of the data. They say they do not sell personal data.

We do not “sell” personal data or personal information, as this term is defined by applicable privacy regulations. We do “share” personal information as defined by Cal. Civ. Code §1798.140(ah) with third-party advertisers, as explained in Section 10 (“U.S. State Privacy Disclosures”) below.

China doesn't even have to steal our data, American companies happily sell it to them.

Your data is very valuable. My understanding, and I am no legal scholar ?, is that Rivian is selling bulk data that has been scrubbed of any personally identifiable info.

The big concern for the industry IMO is selling personally identifiable info and using that to target, upcharge, or otherwise. OnStar just went through a big debacle over reporting info to Lexus Nexus which the auto insurance industry uses as a data source for auto insurance premiums.

Rivian does more than any other car maker IMO to give you options to opt out. You have several in vehicle options and Rivian will even disable the telematics (cellular connection) upon request from the customer. The last one requires a service center visit.

A car maker using its own data, which by the way has been in cars for decades, has nothing to do with "selling" your info. They always can and should use drivers abuse to deny liability.

1. All companies with your data are selling it in some form
2. Don't worry about it, you're not worth that much
I want to give you both a thumbs up and laugh emoji. Funny and true.

Both of you completely missed the point of the video, or didn’t bother watching it at all.

Main take away is that you go over speed limit one time, for example, and it will affect you without you even knowing about it.

This is the 21st century. Trust me, if not Rivian, somebody else is always watching you and knows your every move. Your ISP for example does know where you've been on the web; it's got all the logs to prove it.
Might as well resign yourself to that fact, and I say this not out of pesimism but of sheer realization of what reality is today.

Ford just got a patent to show you ads on the in-car displays based on your data.

American companies? Hell…Americans happily give it out freely. Just create an account with Facebook/X/Instagram and start following/friending random people and you can learn all you want about them.

You get their full names, ages, birthdays, emails , phone numbers, professions, family member names/birthdays/etc…

Once you’ve got that, you’re off & running. People are dumb.

Excellent, with a patent that means others won't use it without licensing it from Ford which means they're much less likely to do it themselves, and I can just avoid ever buying another Ford.

Maybe I should patent a bunch of ideas myself around the enshittification of things just so others can't do it...
