Hi all - I have been waiting for a while for the compact spare to be available at the shop but it either sold out quickly or never came back in stock.

From my little research it seemed like many were advocating for a full size spare and a lot of folks went with RAM 1500 or similar options successfully. Some had good luck finding others selling their older 21" wheels as well but it's not always available.

I am looking for inexpensive options that would let me finish the trip (~500 miles) in case of a flat but don't want to use this on a regular basis. Will any 20x8.5 5-139.7 wheel work for Gen 2 R1S?

Looking at these before our Thanksgiving trip and open to suggestions -

Wheel - MSW Type 52
Tire - Advanta ATX-850 or Firestone Winterforce LT

Discount tire also has similar options where the total comes around $550 without TPMS which I don't plan to spend on since I'll be using it just as spare.

I'm a big fan of the full size spare. I'm also a big fan of putting the full size spare into the rotation as well.

The best option if you want a full sized spare is an extra wheel with the same tire as the others that way you can run it in a 5 tire rotation.

Just some background qs: are you happy with your plan for where to carry the spare? Do you really need a spare at all if it's a road trip? Rivian includes the slime and air compressor which hopefully would cover some cases.
But my answer to your Q, I don't know of any less expensive new wheels than the MSW Type 52.

Have you tried calling Rivian support to schedule an appointment to purchase/install the compact spare tire?

I got my compact spare direct from Rivian by setting up an appointment when compact spares were not available on the gear shop.

I am of the school of thought that most flats on the road can be repaired with a simple plug and don't require a spare tire.
In 50+ years of driving I've never had to use the spare to get anywhere.
I've had a few leaks that were easily repaired with a plug.
(The only time I would think I might need a spare is If you're going off road to some remote location on a sketchy track but, again, I've never had that situation in my old 200,000 mile Land Rover which has a full size spare.)

There isn't a location for a full size spare in the R1S that doesn't require taking up 50% of your rear cargo capacity, so that is a no-go for 90% of R1S owners. Your best option is to order a mini-spare from Rivian which @MidnighRivian noted.

We've decided against a spare on our R1S, as my wife trained herself in using a plug tool along with the use of the onboard air. My personal R1T has a full-size spare because it is an off-roader.

If I were the OP, I would order the mini-spare kit, get a good plug kit and of course, get a set of our magnetic jack pucks. AAA or any decent tow service can then do a roadside repair or tire change.

What my wife has in her R1S storage area. Our XL high lift magnetic puck, our magnetic jack puck kit, tire plug kit and the Big Red 10T Bottle Jack.

I just bought a set of used 20" Ram 1500 wheels. I've got two left that I thought I'd sell to other rivian owners who also want a full size spare for off roading. I'm selling them for $75 each but I'm in Denver.

Looks almost exactly like my R1S storage area (my 5 pucks are yellow as well), but I have a couple addtional things that don't take up much space:
  • Gerber multi-tool for pulling out screws or nails (also gives me screwdrivers and a knife)
  • Work gloves for handling things
  • Nite Ize Headband Flashlight Holder - This will hold the Rivian flashlight and gives me a hands-free light - at $7 it's worth it!
Underneath I have a 1/2" torque wrench and a 22mm 1/2" socket just in case I need to remove the tire to plug it.

@rexian - A lot of us have gone "spareless" if you're not heading too far from civilization (i.e. a tire shop or tire service). Probably the most important thing for you to have would be a set of Jack Pucks when traveling because you can't count on the random tire place you have to use to have a set that will work with the Rivian. I'll strongly recommend the magnetic ones - I actually bought mine before we took delivery of our R1S. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I had bad luck with my Tesla on similar road trips on multiple occasions - 3 times in 2 years and the last one was a scary one in the middle of a storm. I don't know if these big tires are less prone to flat than smaller Model 3 tires but I wouldn't mind sacrificing some trunk space for time savings / peace of mind. I am still thinking about the compact spare.

I didn't know I could do that. Thank you! What do I mention in the service request? Just that I'd like to purchase a compact spare?

Ya, just create a ticket and say would like to buy / have installed the compact spare.

Support will call you and tell if you it’s possible or not.

What are 5 pucks for? I have the 4-pack but wondering what I am missing here. Thanks.

I'd ask why one would need 4 and not just 2 :) BTW, I too ordered a set of 4 since buying 2 is not cost effective but 1 is what I'd think most people would need for tire repairs and 2 for rotation. To lift the entire car I'd need 4 bottle jacks and I have no such plans.
