Rivian should not integrate CarPlay or Android Auto or Tesla FSD or anything else that places maximum dependency + risk on third party software.

Integrating Cast is a compromise solution that pretty much works for everyone. For Apple users, what's the difference between pressing AirPlay vs Cast buttons on media playback? similar icon, same screen.
Could not disagree more with this take. AA/CP are safer integrations than our current options. Even setting aside the navigation stuff because I find Rivian’s to be fine, having text message dictation and moving certain controls off our phones and onto the vehicle’s screen is inherently safer by enabling people to not touch their phones.

I’m also fine if Rivian can keep pace with the app options and updates that phones offer, but I’m stuck joining work calls while driving by navigating apps on my phone (which are available on CarPlay) and managing my Apple Music through my phone with the exception of skipping back and forth within a playlist.

rivian’s first party experience is great, but it’s incomplete for many people’s real world uses. So many us have phone mounts for that exact reason.

Off topic, but back around 2013 The Count observed a 1978 Cutlass in the south bound lane of the Las Vegas airport tunnel with a tablet installed on the dash. The driver was playing/watching a 1980s era porn movie.

I suggest getting a third party CP device, learning to adapt without CP, or getting a new vehicle. CP isn’t happening

This is adapting without CP. It’s fine. I’m not counting on it happening (although I don’t know why anyone is so sure it won’t). But to say it shouldn’t is what I disagree with. If it’s ever added, it’s just an option. Don’t use it if you don’t want it.

Because adopting CP/AA prevents Rivian from owning the entire in car experience. And now they have to consider multiple UX paths, designs, and it’s not optimal for the team. Rivian has a strong software and product team. CP/AA is adopted by those without good software teams

That is not necessarily true. Studies have shown that any distraction is unsafe, whether it is on your phone or on the display. And this one showed that drivers using AA/CP were slower to react than someone high or drunk…

If they just let you do casting while on the move, you could cast your entire phone screen (at least on Android) and have "Android Auto" :D you'd just still need to control it from your phone, but being able to have any app up while driving would be great, shame it's going to be locked behind being stopped/parked
If they could take the partnership one step further and add google maps ?

Help me. You are my only hope.

Sorry, this is just wrong on basically every point, except the one about Rivian having a strong software team, that's definitely true. The rest of these arguments have been rubbished so many times on this forum it's just not worth addressing them.

I feel the same. CP isn’t happening for good reasons.

The Rivian team are full of ideas. Casting is a clever way to answer the streaming challenge quickly while they tackle native integration. Think it's great.

I see no reason they can't find a solve for text messaging assistance without handing over control to AA or CP anyway.

May be other ways to skin the cat just as they have with casting here.

This is better than I thought it would be.

My guess then is that the talks that rivian is having with apple are in regards to something similar then.

My son just said it best. "It keeps getting better and better every day." These updates are all improvements in some form or another. It is impossible to please everyone. Priorities vary. I will be the first to admit that some of the updates have been "useless" for my use case, but then the next one comes along and hits all my needs. Embrace the fact that Rivian is constantly improving a product you have already paid for. Kudos to the Rivian team. Keep up the good work!

So does this mean I don't need to go out and buy a new iPad Pro now? /s

I guess overall I am glad they are doing this. But it really won't change much for me. Even during the occasional charging stop, my first reaction generally isn't to stream a video. But I guess by starting here it helps them get to the next software development. And it seems smarter/easier than developing video apps for each service that may need continuing maintenance or updates. There is some video based content out there where I would be fine just listening to the audio even if the video didn't play (like documentaries or interviews, or live games/sports).

I am still confused by the amount of people that want to stream to the rear screen rather than spend a couple hundred of dollars for a tablet for their kids. Have they ever sat in the back seat, and looked at the screen, even in a driveway? Rivian installed usb ports and hangers on the back of the front seats for a reason. I can understand maybe having a map on the rear screen for them to look at, possibly with estimated time left on the trip.

My ā€˜23. Bronco has the entire ford infotainment ecosystem, or can auto start CP/AA. I appreciate this option and go for CP every time over stock.
