I am considering to switch my 21 inch with 20 inch.

I have not driven 20 inch R1S. Those who have experienced both 21 road and 20 AT, could you please share your thoughts on the ride?

Thanks.

I was wondering why you might want to switch from 21" to 20 AT's. I like the 21" street tire because it's quiet, good in deep sand. and gives better mileage. So basically I have no need to switch and would like to understand what I m missing.

Once the tires' threads get to the point I need to replace them, there will be only one option. I hear that there are many options for 20 inch. Yes, there will be an initial investment for the 2 inch wheels, but it may pay off after 3 tire replacements.

But if the 20's NVH is not comparable to that of 20's then I might just pay $$$$ for 21 inch tires.

I test drove both 20 & 21, and only felt a slight difference. I went with the 20s because of the availability and someone here with 21s got a flat and was stuck for a week in SD waiting for a replacement. I have about 6k miles on them and they ride fine. Once these go, I might get AS instead of AT because I don't do any off roading at all. BTW-my milage is about 2.12.

20” ride better, have a much greater range of tire options and are better off road. The 10% range hit equates for typical mileage to be less than $100 a year cheaper - so not really an issue for most people and few rarely use the 280+ range daily.

20 AS may be the best option for me as well.

Hi folks,
do I read that many people get better efficiency on 20’ than 21’ … I thought the 21’ with aero covers (r1s) were the best efficiency wise? I often have 620 mi trips one way and my 21 s get us there with 3 or 4 charges…depending on weather or stations issues… or <250 mi range ish from 80 soc /On highway at 75-77 mph in eco with family load. What are the conditions where people get better efficiency than this tire setup please?

My early 2022 was equipped with 20" ATs. My new Max Pack that I picked up today is on 21" wheels.

The 21's are much, much quieter and have a slightly better road handling feel. The 20's are somewhat softer and are likely more capable.

The 21's are expensive to replace as there is only one option (with a second coming soon) but the 20's were wearing much quicker than I hoped. I replaced the OE set with 13k miles on them because they absolutely roared. I fully expected to not get out of the teens with the replacement set too.

My wife and I have a R1T with 20” tires and we picked up a dual motor R1S with 21” tires 10 days ago.

I used to think the ride quality on our 20” tires was the most incredible I had ever experienced. Now, I have to say, the 21s ride even better (somehow). Both are excellent.

Correct, the 20” General Grabber HTS60 (275/60R20) is equal to or more efficient than 21” OEM. Riviot, LL75, JJE, ajthonysfl, and many others have data to confirm. Other than wearing out very quick and being expensive, not sure what the key attributes of the 21” tire are.

That hasn’t been my experience. Got a set of 21s for my day to day use and found ride quality, handling, and noise to be noticeably improved.

I had my 2022 Rivian R!T with 21 inch tires in for service yesterday (windshield replacement and tire rotation). They gave me a loaner R1T with 20 inch AT tires on it. When I first started driving the loaner down the street at 30 mph I thought something was wrong with it, there was so much noise and vibration, then I realized it was the tire distance. I only drove it about 15 miles, including some short freeway time, but that was enough to convince me to never get that 20 inch tire. I'm sure they are better when new but wow, I could not stand the noise of those 20 inch tires. Not sure how many miles they had, but there was definitely plenty of tread life on them when I checked. So if you like a quiet vehicle, like me, then go with the 21 inch tires, unless you really need the off-road ability and are the type to be unaffected by loud tire noise.

Had 21" stock tires. Had no issues and was on pace for about 25k miles before needing replacement.
Bought 20" rims and put on AS tires the same size as the 21" tires. No difference in ride or efficiency. Now can put on offroad tires when needed.

Rivian should have ditched the 21" wheel idea for simplicity & production efficiency. i just don't see the benefit of It over the 20 with 275/60 AS or 22.
