I'm here to vent and commiserate!

I'm a huge fan of my R1S... just this week I told someone who asked how I liked it ... That "it changed my life" (I said it with out thinking and it kind of made me second guess my answer in the moment)

However, maybe the universe is telling me to pump the brakes...

Monday an unknown rock chip revealed itself by way of the car wash, leading to a quickly advancing crack...

The positive part of this is that the Las Vegas service center is able to get me in this week!

THE OVERWHELMING NEGATIVE is that the full cost of a replacement piece of glass is $1700 installed!!!

There is no other alternative to such a vulnerable part of the car, no mobile glass, wont sell to other more reasonable cost installers, wont release the sensor calibration software!

Coincidentally the service centers also doesn't work with most insurance providers to file glass claims!

Coming from a Jeep JL Wrangler I am no stranger to bad glass and frequent windshield repair! $700 bucks a pop is the common cost in Jeep world, but $1700 only at the service center is Highway ROBBERY !!

THIS ASPECT OF RIVIAN IS UNSUSTAINABLE! - FIX THIS BULLSHIT

What is your real, based on facts and statistical data, source for your information and the quality of the glass compared to other OEM's? Going by your profile you don't own a Rivian.
I've had my Launch Edition R1t Since September, ~10500 miles now. had a reservation since May of 2019. I have been following the threads here for years with people mentioning replacing their second or third windshield, and several posts about very mild pressure on the roof busting the glass...

I have also been driving for about 22 years and only replaced 1 windshield, so it is between my experiential observations, comparisons between our 3 current cars currently here in Colorado, and browsing the forums where I make my statement that the glass is weak.

We are new to Colorado, but between our Hyundai Palisade, Land rover discovery and R1T, it seems like every pebble that touches the Rivian glass, makes a visible pit.

Just like my profile not being updated, I am not going to cite sources and provide statistical analysis to you. There are people on here that have cited various glass manufacturers from corning and such that hold up much better given similar situations.
Are you just upset that I am complaining like others without providing a bibliography and an updated profile?

I find your claim that there are no alternative installers dubious given that Rivian told me this week that they are not capable of installing windshields themselves at the service center and that if I scheduled the repair through them they would have to send it to a 3rd party body shop a few miles away for the repair.

And they told me that it would be faster and more convenient for me to work directly with the 3rd party shop. And that certainly seems to be the case as the 3rd party shop only required 4 days to get the parts and was able to offer appointments as soon as the next day after the parts arrived.

I remember reading someone had put some sort of protective film on the outside glass. Not sure how well that worked. It's a shame that we even have to consider this though.

I mentioned this in a few other posts on this thread...

The only Rivian certified collision center in Las Vegas told me they were not interested in doing the glass. (to my knowledge this is the only place that Rivian will provide parts to)

This will be the vehicles 3rd windshield...because of the original had a factory defect in the laminate! The Las Vegas service center replaced that one under warranty in their shop!

Other shops not wanting to work on your vehicle is not the same thing as Rivian "wont sell to other more reasonable cost installers, wont release the sensor calibration software"

Tesla was $1200 in 2016 for a 2014 Model S. Not sure what it is now, but I assume it's less due to economies of scale and production bandwidth. So $1700 right now doesn't seem insane. Painful yes, insane no.

So I think a lot of people don’t realize all the cameras and driver + / autopilot feature attached to the windshield compared to older cars. This is what accounts for the major cost.
Also, heads-up displays. There's some stuff in there to make those work properly. I had a Hyundai Palisade that got a crack in it and Safelite charged over $2000.

Absolutely not. If there's a fault with something I'm all for pointing that out and Rivian working to improve. But your post without any source of real information just perpetuates an unverified data point that has been beaten to death on an online forum. Plus the forums are crawling with trolls (many TSLA fans, not say you are one) who do nothing by post garbage.

I've had Xterra's, (2) new Land Rovers, (2) new Porsches, a Jeep and a VW, and none have been immune to windshield issues. The Land Rovers were the only ones I never had any glass issues with. The broken windshield we experienced with our R1T was a rock from a large construction dump truck and it would have broken any windshield. Other than that, we've had no issues. I personally hand wash our truck and I've never felt the roof glass would "crack" in an instant.

Keep in mind people come to a forum to complain and vent. Rivian has delivered tens of thousands of vehicles and maybe a few hundred people are active here. Show me real OEM side-by-side glass data and then we can go after Rivian claiming weak glass.

Imagine a world where the R2 windshield cost $1700 dollars and guess the kind of coverage it will receive
The windshield on my wife’s Model Y was $1550. The windshield on her X5 was $1800. The windshield on my Land Cruiser was $2200. The windshield on my Range Rover was $3k.

Windshields are expensive. I live in the mountains, so I keep $0 glass coverage for a reason…

I thought I had it bad with my R32 GTR. The windscreen is not just mould specific, it is batch specific, since GTR windscreens from 1989 onwards had the antennae for the radio moulded inside the window layer - look closely on any R32 GTR and you'll see a thin metal strip in the middle of the windshield... and they are getting rare....

That said, I can still get it for half of what Rivian is (reportedly) charging here... its around $1400 AUD, which is under $1k USD... this is nonsense. If Rivian wanna cut costs they should also look at getting rid of the moon roof as a cost saving option (and a skin cancer option in sunny places)

I'm so sorry to hear this, but, honestly not surprised. This is why I decided to go with the "preferred" insurance company when I bought my Rivian. Nationwide. I was terrified that I would have to buy new glass. Then Nationwide raised my premiums 6 months later by $250 per 6 months. This is a compete racket and I am very disappointed that Rivian has participated/colluded with Nationwide to corner the market on Rivian insurance and force us to use them if we want decent coverage. I love my Rivian as well, but, had I known about all of these hidden pitfalls I wouldn't have bought it.

Rivian glass is brittle. My windshield is not going to last even 3 years. Already have a crack started from seemingly nothing. Don't lean on your roof glass either! I know it's for weight savings, but that's not a place to skimp. People have walked on Tesla roofs and windshields.

Got mine back from Rivian yesterday with my new windshield. Today I find that my frunk will not close automatically, it sees an obstruction.:(
