I've seen posts from members in 2022 confirming that Rivian offered trade-in values on Tesla Model Y's in $60-70k range. What is the most recent experience with Tesla trade-in offers from Rivian?

I don’t think you’ll get anywhere near high trade-in value with Rivian. Rivian low balls Tesla cars, like with other cars. It’s better to sell your Tesla on your own than trade it in with Rivian.

Rivian resells through Cox automotive (previously known). How do I know? Our Volt ended up in this lot before I turned off OnStar.

Considering the multiple price cuts in 2023 don't expect to feel like your Tesla was an actual investment.

Does Rivian actually acquire legal ownership of trade ins or do they basically work as a middleman for large wholesalers (or other large buyers)? Since Rivian doesn’t sell used vehicles to consumers, I’ve always assumed they are merely an intermediary.

Not that !! I traded in my 11 month old Y in December for my R1S. The Y cost me close to $70K on December 31st 2022, 2 weeks before Tesla did the massive price cut. Rivian gave me $40K for it December 2023. It was in pristine condition, low mileage, and upgrades. Privately I could have sold for closer to $45K, but when you factor in the reduced tax burden with the exchange, and the complete lack of hassle, I was okay for them to take it.

As for 'when in the process can you get the trader in offer' - once you agree to purchase. Give them the VIN, details, upload photos, title etc, and they confirm it all within about 24 hours. Then at pick-up, they barely checked it. Very easy process.

This exactly. I traded a 2-year old RAM 1500 with numerous scratches, cracked windshield and interior bits falling apart from a mouse taking up residence in it. I asked my Rivian guide if they wanted me to show them the problems and they had no interest. Said it didn't matter and was going straight to a wholesaler. By the time I left with my R1T, it was already on a flatbed.

The 2022 used car market was weird because of covid. We won't see values like that again unless there's another major supply chain disruption.

I received 5k more for my Model 3 from a local used car dealer ($37,500) than I did from Rivian's offer (~$32K). This was
before Tesla's price cut last year.

Thank you all for the invaluable info. If I build out my Model Y today, it would cost $53,630 with 40 miles less stated range. I have 29,000 miles on my 2020 MY in great condition. What would be a fair price as a trade-in on an R1T. Autotrader suggest $39k-$42k.

You won't get $39K-$42K. As I said, I had a 2023 Y, 11K miles. Great condition. It was LR like yours, with acceleration boost, tow hook, red. They offered me $40K. Yours is a 2020 with 29K miles. No way you get $40K.
