2023 Rivian R1S
This article kinda trashes the interior, and gets some things wrong.
“revealed poorly applied veneers that were already cracking at the corners”
I’m assuming they are referring to the dash. It’s not a veneer. It’s a solid piece of wood and the cuts are on purpose. This was discussed by Rivian when the R1T launched.
It absolutely 100% is a veneer over a plastic backing. And the cuts in the corners were required to wrap the veneer around the curved areas. Covered in one of the Munro videos.

Excerpt:

How the Future Should Look

Contrary to the Tesla Cybertruck and Elon Musk’s opinion that “the future should look like the future,” it is, in fact, possible to look futuristic and modern without looking ridiculous. That’s the R1S in a nutshell: sleek, modern and totally different from its competitors in the details, with a standard of usability and conventionality that hasn’t been discarded in order to “look like the future.”

Very objective review. Definitely the road wheels are firmer and more precise compared to the 20s at the expense of comfort and off road ability.

Its definitely a veneer. A wood that isn’t often used as a veneer in vehicles (ash). My R1S had large gaps forming in the upper portions on both sides, which I attributed to poor veneer quality, cheap adhesive, and direct sun exposure with no protectant applied.

"an air of upscale sophistication that’s lacking from competitors like the Mercedes-EQ EQS SUV"

If this reviewer finds any current Mercedes acceptable, then the R1S is not for him. I find new Mercedes interiors to be really trashy, with bendy plastics, too many materials and cut lines, absurd lighted sphincter-shaped air vents, and candy colored lighting that would be more suitable at a strip club... in Tampa or Newark. I am not saying that the Rivian is perfect, but Mercedes is not the standard of good taste, design or engineering anymore.

Looks like someone has high standards for strip clubs......

When you're right you're right. Current Mercedes offerings under 150k are downright garish. Get yourself a G wagen and they are decent still but all the offerings around the Rivian price point have no taste. Very poorly done and while Rivian may not have the finest quality finishings they do have style and taste.

“Tampa Strip Club” will now be part of my lexicon to describe trashy interiors. Thank you for this gift.

Hogwash. Based on the number of complaints and "oh poor me" posts here, it's clearly the worse one ever made. I mean who builds a car at this price where the roof rail trim isn't flush with the glass roof?! and delivered with microfiber lint all over the interior?! Unacceptable! /s
