My app has a buffering wheel spinning over the update button I pushed for about an hour and fifteen minutes right now. I'm hanging in there though.

I think the usual updates are incremental and they go faster and there is enough processing going on to report status when they are updated and this is a full stack reimage which means longer time, bigger size, and no status reporting

Really? These updates are GBs large! Now I’m wondering if my assumption that they are independent and encapsulated updates was wrong. Seems large if they are truly just incremental updates, but I could be wrong.

Did it take you hours to update all those patches? Seems like a weird way to deploy.
If it works like I think it does, these updates are a VM that gets swapped out. It’s the entire android operating system plus whatever Rivian software is on there.

that is signed and checksummed as a whole bundle.

Apple does a similar thing with iOS and macOS, which is why their updates can take so long. They are not patching, they are replacing the whole OS each time.

(Apple does have a lower touch mechanism for critical security fixes)

I’m totally speculating about how this stuff works with Rivian.

Back in business with a successful update.

As others have mentioned, you’ll get an error message at first. Don’t worry about it. It’ll sit at 0% progress for while, then 7%, then 95%.

Took about 35 minutes as advertised.

Overall, VERY impressed with how quickly Rivian fixed this! Wassym and his team deserve some recognition for their accountability and action.

This will quickly be a distant memory.

Now let’s ramp up the powered tonneau replacements! ?
i had the same experience

That’s what I assumed as well. But, people are saying they had to do intermediate/incremental updates, which goes against that deployment philosophy.

Hmm... I went out to the R1S and it looked completely asleep and still had the buffering wheel in the app.
Rivian R1T R1S Software Update 2023.42.0 is out (⚠️ UPDATE: OTA fix rolling out today 11/15/23) Screenshot_20231115_200357_Rivian

I opened the door and woke it up, but was the same black screen

I closed the app (stopped it) and opened again and it immediately said couldn't install.

When I closed the alert it then had the update button at the top again..I pushed the button and now back to the buffering wheel. Total elapsed time from first initialized update about an hour and twenty minutes

I think this is probably why it took them a day and a half, they had to account for the "how are people going to mess this up" aspect of it. Just leave it alone for a bit. Initiating the process again might start it completely over.

Oh! Update from my post above!

I closed the screen that says update with the buffering wheel and then scrolled.down to the bottom under the climate and service and went into updates. Then it showed the update with the "update now" button available even though I already clocked on the update button (but did it from the alert at the top of the app page near the hamburger menu).

It then asked me to verifyi wanted to do the update and when I clicked yes it immediately showed the progress bar and 0%

I think the update needs to be initialized from the menu at the bottom, not the update icon at the top of the app

after 45 minutes of not being able to press the update button because it’s grayed out, the whole update box is gone and now it’s like my truck never got the fix. Awesome.
How are you getting to the button? Are you using the link at the top of the app? Try going to the bottom below the service link and click on updates and then see if you can start the update there

Any help from CS?
They think it’s just installing on its own without my telling it to. It’s been over an hour and no changes so far, so I’m not feeling great but whatever

I am glad they didn't rush the fix. I would rather them take a bit of extra time to thoroughly test the solution and have a few more sets of eyes on it then put something out a bit sooner that they are only 99% confident in.
That would make sense, but that's not why it took the extra time. They probably had the update fixed in 5 minutes, but what took time was figuring out how the hell to apply it. There was an interview posted (good read, link a few pages back) that explained they had no way to push the OTA and they were thinking a physical repair was the only path. However, some smart engineer(s) figured out a "creative" way to get the update OTA anyway using a backdoor or something. So, I might be impressed with the engineer that figured that out, but their overall architecture had flaws that prevented them from recovering from a bad OTA. Hopefully they learn from this and have a path in place if this every happened again (shouldn't).

I feel like you have the same thing I did without the buffering wheel. On Facebook some have said it looked like it stalled and then the closed the app like I did, opened it, got a failed to install notification.andnthrn clicked update and it worked. Some got the failed to install notification w couple of times and kept trying..might be a procedure to keep in mind of you get to a point where you give up on the current try.

I figure the app just initializes the install and that is it. I wonder since we are doing such a special install of the app isn't prepared for retrying, error handing etc

I had a bunch of error messages when initially trying to install, but eventually it seemed to download and install just fine. Not sure I ever got a confirmation message that it was going, though the app showed ‘progress.’

After the install, everything is back to normal.
