Overall, VERY impressed with how quickly Rivian fixed this! Wassym and his team deserve some recognition for their accountability and action.
Impressed?!? It took them 48 hours to revert/fix a bad update. This shouldn't have taken even half the time. Really makes one wonder how these updates are staged and applied on the backed/vehicle.

So I keep getting this message. Rivian guy said it’s actually updating even though the app says it’s not. Rivian guy says it “takes awhile”. It’s been 1.5 hours and I see nothing to indicate it’s done anything. Says I should wait at least another 1.5 hours.

Rivian R1T R1S Software Update 2023.42.0 is out (⚠️ UPDATE: OTA fix rolling out today 11/15/23) IMG_3722

They may have Wifi at service centers that the vehicles automatically connect to.
Tesla does. My son’s parking area doesn’t have WiFi or cell coverage, so when he wants to install an update in his Model 3 Tesla Service told him just go to any Service Center and leave it parked in the lot for a bit. He’s been updating that way for several years.

Update received over LTE, applied, took forever to get to 7%, then completed without error. In fact, without a message saying it completed...

Anyway, everything is back to normal now. I guess I won't trade the Rivian in... for now.

after 45 minutes of not being able to press the update button because it’s grayed out, the whole update box is gone and now it’s like my truck never got the fix. Awesome.

Hmm… maybe I’ll wait to upgrade until the next one rolls out. No PAAK improvements can be worth this fiasco.

There should be a lot less disdain for Tesla. I've only owned a Tesla for 2 years so far, but I've probably done about 50 software updates since I bought it. Not a single issue with an update. These vehicles are highly software dependent, so the least an EV startup should be able to do is update software without a hitch. Otherwise, folks will be afraid to run a software update. VW addresses this issue by not releasing any OTA updates. Rivian should have had a much more stringent software update quality controls. This debacle cannot be undone easily. Time to make RAN chargers free of charge for another year as a token of good will.
I had my model 3 for 4 years before the Rivian and I was shocked at just how reliable the thing was. I really never had any issues with the thing. I WISH I could say the same for my Rivian. I LOVE the truck...when it's working right. I'm very likely going to sell mine after this incident, but I have no idea what else I'd get. There's nothing that excites me like this thing does, but I can't live with how unreliable it's been and how inconvenient the service center location is. I never wanted to go back to Tesla, but a Model Y may just not be a bad option
Tesla owner since 2013: S, X, 3 and Y. Never happened to me personally, probably because I was always cautious and waited to see reports of success first, but there were definitely OTA updates that disabled functions or fully bricked cars. Sometimes they were fixed by a call to Service who then pushed a fix directly to the car, other times required flat bed tow to an SC (Mobile service wasn’t really a thing early on).

I also had lots of problems with my S in particular early on, but also my 2016 X. My neighbor mocked me for how often I was driving a loaner. Eventually Tesla figured things out and the 3 (which is now my son’s) has needed little service and my Y went two years before I brought it in for a suspension issue and the AC filter smell problem.

Rivian is a step ahead thanks to some of the lessons Tesla learned, but has to go through its own learning as well. Keep the faith - they’ll get there.

Not sure you will get the next one without this one. The only ones that seem to skip are when they put out patches like 2023.42 will go away because of 2023.42.02. I had a loaner that was 3 patches behind, they went to the truck in order so to get it updated I did all three updates. Only one at a time is prompted.

Really? These updates are GBs large! Now I’m wondering if my assumption that they are independent and encapsulated updates was wrong. Seems large if they are truly just incremental updates, but I could be wrong.

Did it take you hours to update all those patches? Seems like a weird way to deploy.

I am glad they didn't rush the fix. I would rather them take a bit of extra time to thoroughly test the solution and have a few more sets of eyes on it then put something out a bit sooner that they are only 99% confident in.

Success on my end. I did see a brief message when it completed to 100% indicating the update had failed; but then it indicted success. If I wasn't staring at my phone, I wouldn't had seen it. I just took it for a spin in southern California's first winter storm & everything functioned perfectly.

I do not think they are true incremental. Seems like how they get pushed are based on current level. It is possible that some of the drivers get applied in the deployment and are not updated or included in subsequent builds. That is pure speculation on my part as I am not privy to there inner workings. Only going by how it is currently working.

A further confirmation of that is the first OTA after I got my vehicle failed on one of the modules, I had to drop it off for a hardware replacement. By the time my appointment came up 2 other updates were deployed. I saw on my app they tried pushing the latest version once the repair was done and it failed. They had to redeploy the one that had the failed module, then the one after that and finally the latest one for them to succeed.
