Strangers policing reasons you bought your EV

I noticed something interesting after the third or fourth conversation with a total stranger about my T and I'm curious if it's just me or if this is common.

It always starts off harmlessly with s stranger asking "what made you decide to go electric?" Or something.

And I give my canned spiel about being in the middle of COVID shutdowns when I started to look for an F150 and found I'd have to wait for... Who knows how long and realized I could wait for a Rivian, instead, for the same price, yadda yadda yadda.

But then comes the thing.

"Oh ok so you bought it for (reasons). I just wanted to make sure you didn't buy it for environmental reasons like SOME people."

Like, who do you think you are, random stranger!? What do you care? You don't think for this amount of money and a paradigm shift I didn't do the logic? I'm well aware that it's not the most efficient EV and I plan on having it long enough to break even on carbon emissions for a comparable vehicle - on top of having a badass truck.

It's just so WEIRD to me that people JuSt WaNt To Be SuRe...

Maybe so they can somehow rationalize rolling coal out of their Ramrod 2500.

I agree that it’s weird. It’s happened once or twice (though usually more subtle and sometimes it’s actually more about the price). The majority of interactions are positive though.

I'm not making sure they're rolling coal for any particular reason.

Are EV drivers (as a trend) subjecting ICE drivers to a standardized test to make sure they're qualified to make that decision?

There is zero moral authority derived from driving an EV vs anything else. I don’t disagree that there are some weird questions at times but that’s part of owning a piece of equipment that is new and not well understood.

Exactly. I don’t go out of my way to tell coal rollers that they are ruining the environment and killing people with air pollution. The argument that an EV truck is t saving the environment but it’s so much better than a gas or diesel truck isn’t not even close.

I've never had anyone come out and say that. To be fair I have encountered it on the other side with someone being obnoxiously preachy about their environmental concerns. I can understand being turned off by people like that, I am, but assuming everyone with an EV is one of those people is ignorant.

Especially considering the last figures I saw put actual EV ownership at 9% of people identifying as liberal having one and 8% of conservative identifying individuals having one. In the media it seems like the ideological divide is pretty great when it comes to electric vehicles but there are an extremely large number of Teslas here in Knoxville area. We even have a Tesla showroom here. There are a lot of other EVs too. Most of the comments I get are positive regarding my Rivian.

Unfortunately people I work with are a bunch of EV haters. I used to hear them complain about the subject [insert any negative ev topic here], and after I got my R1S they gone quiet. it was a culture shock for them

Up until recently when gas was approach $6, so I mentioned I haven’t noticed because I haven’t been to gas station in a while… we got a few laughs from that. Lol

or, showed the car to someone and first thing they say, “oh it’s the one that’s really expensive…”

or another R1S owner complained how come he had to wait 3 years, and I only waited 2 years

I tend to get more negative responses for some reason. Didn’t expect that at all

Sad people do not want to do their own research or thinking.

Several studies out there showing that cradle to grave EVs are more than 60% better for the environment than comparable sized ICE vehicles.

Even better if charging from solar or states where electricity is increasingly using less coal and natural gas and using renewable sources. This will only get better over time.

Best response would be if you want to change you need to start somewhere, you are doing your part, would appreciate it if they could do theirs.

in the comma states (coast line states) I find that it’s generally accepted to drive an EV no matter your political standing. It’s places in the middle of the country that they have more judgement and compare to politics. Honestly I love the fact that I can drive my EV to a trendy Portland local restaurant and get a plant based meal. And I tell people not to put me into a “box”. If people judged me on that they would be wrong every time.
