The range of the smallest Rivian battery is not that great.

The large pack DM has better performance than the GT-line and has almost 50% more range (243 vs 340). That’s easily worth the extra $10,000 or so to me and probably most others who are looking at spending $75,000+ on a vehicle.

Also, the Light LR version that gets 300 miles is a RWD configuration. Not comparable to a Rivian at all.

The KIAs are nice and all, but they’re definitely not luxury.
$60K for a 300-mile 7-seat SUV with an interior that is more comfortable than the Rivian is a huge win. Not everyone needs a fast off-roader. A lot of people just need a 7-seater to do their daily driving with kids.

Clearly you have not sat in an EV9 yet. It is definitely a more lux experience than the R1S.

Kia is luxury? I know they are nicer than they used to be, but I have trouble putting them in the luxury category. I know Rivian isn't as luxury as some of the more established luxury brands, but I have trouble believing Kia is ahead of it. And the Kia on road performance isn't the same as the Rivian's, if you believe the numbers.
People really need to sit in one before knocking them. Why criticize something before you even tried one in person? It’s what I tell my kids all the time.

I didn't see it in this reporting, but I believe the first EV9's won't be eligible for any of the Tax Rebates from the IRA. I believe the Rivians would be at least eligible for half. That would effect the resulting price accordingly.

I personally like the look of the EV9 and I think it's got a lot of good tech. I don't like that it seems like you're going to have a subscription fee for those features. I think it probably has plenty of range for most people, but my model 3 has similar range and I've found myself wanting more when exploring Michigan with my family. If I couldn't afford a Rivian, I'd be looking more strongly at the RWD EV9 at 300 miles range. Rivian becomes more price competitive with the top two trims. It's also where they're more comparable to each other if you don't go off-roading.

Rivian DM Standard Battery : ~$74k after rebate up to 270 estimated range. And the Rivian has more storage space.

I still say nicer than they used to be, but still not "luxury". If Hyundai/Kia really wanted a luxury brand, they should come out with one, maybe call it Genesis.

I’m not saying they’re bad - I said they’re nice. But they’re not Mercedes/BMW/Lexus quality, and that’s fine. Personally, I like the styling of the EV9 and would definitely consider it if the range specs weren’t awful for all but the RWD version (and even that’s barely enough IMO)

If performance doesn’t matter, why spend $60k on a vehicle when you can buy one that will also get your kids from point A to B for $40k?

I just don’t see a RWD vehicle with 201 HP, especially at that weight, being all that competitive except for those in one small demographic - people who don’t care at all about performance or driving dynamics, need 7 seats, must have an EV, and live in a climate where a very heavy lower-HP RWD vehicle is practical year-round. If that’s you, then yeah, that’s the best bargain out there.

Edit: just looked up the 0-60 and it’s 8.8 seconds. One of the hallmarks of traditional luxury vehicles was not just interior quality, but effortless acceleration relative to other vehicles at lower price points. 8.8 seconds is slower than a Toyota Corolla.

I believe they’ll offer the full $7500 for lease deals from day 1

Overall a compelling offering so far, look forward to hearing more details.

There’s room for many more EV models to choose from and I welcome the EV9 to the fold!

its pretty tiny compared to the Rivian. It’s similar to our EV6 in that it is a weird plastic compartment within the hood, though about double the size of our EV6’s compartment.

I sat in one recently at the dealer and played around with it while we waited excruciatingly long time to finish our deal on our EV6. It is very nice inside. I still wouldn’t put it in the luxury realm, but probably close to on par with the Rivians when it comes to finish and features. Of course it was the top trim one, though, so the comparison only favors the Kia in the lower trims (which Rivian needs to start playing in soon!)

Initial production starts in Korea, but they will begin manufacturing the EV9 in Georgia sometime late next year. So my guess is it will qualify for at least half the credit at that point.

Dead on arrival in Canada, no one is going to pay $80-95K CAD (if pricing is the same as the US) for a Kia.

I'm just going to assume the Kia charges faster and will work fine on long trips as far as range.

The real question will also be about storage inside these vehicles when going on long trips. I currently have a Subaru Ascent and it is amazing how much more the R1S can hold with the large frunk and real design. I will be curious to see how the EV9 is when loading luggage.

Yes I know the R1S is a full sized SUV but it is within an inch of my Ascent in length so it isn't massive on the outside but it holds a lot more stuff more easily.

I'd like to swap out my Kia Telluride for the Light Long Range RWD trim but only at MSRP. I had to shop around to find the telluride at MSRP. If they pull the "Market adjustment" bs then I'll happily keep my Telluride.

Its got van specs so people will use it like a van. Even the Telluride comes with weak hp but its stylish, roomy, comfortable and great for hauling kids to soccer practice and coscto trips.

Having said all that, its one expensive van. I mean all the so called ev SUVs are vans except for R1S

Good luck getting one at list price
Until quite recently, nearly every Kia dealer was adding a "market adjustment" fee to the Telluride at levels that often exceeded $10,000. While those fees have since declined, and in some places with slowing sales, disappeared completely, it's worth noting that Kia Motors made no attempt to reign in their dealers.

Long story short, I'm a Telluride owner and love the car. In the top trim level, it really does come quite close to being a luxury vehicle. It looks like the EV9 is the BEV Telluride, and if that's the case, i could be a great choice. That said, Kia's failure to do anything about the ridiculous dealer market adjustment fees speaks volumes about the company and is a dealbreaker for me. My Telluride will be both the first and last Kia I will own.
