Rivian CEO: We're not worried about Tesla's Cybertruck

Yahoo FInance - Rivian (RIVN) CEO RJ Scaringe isn't losing sleep over Tesla's (TSLA) Cybertruck, even though the two companies' high-end electric pickups are set to compete.

“If you were to think of the Venn diagrams with customers, there's probably not a lot of overlap,” he told the audience at Code Conference 2023 late Tuesday. "But I think it's great that a product like that exists in the world. If we truly want to electrify everything that's produced – to give us some scale – there's one and a half billion cars on the planet, and we as a planet produce 90 million a year."

Yeah one is a pretty well fleshed out utilitarian vehicle and the other one is a look at me dumpster shaped shit box on wheels. The cyber truck looks like a dumpster while the Rivian looks like a vehicle.

They just need to replace the casing. Everything else is great. I'm not a Tesla hater. I'm all for think "outside the box" but the exterior design of the cybertruck is just too much.

Cybertruck buyers aren’t going to be traditional truck buyers. So, I really doubt it’ll meaningfully replace ICE trucks.

The only people buying them will be existing Tesla fanboys

Way back before the drawings and any ideas about what it would look like came out, I went to the Tesla store and almost put down a deposit. The person there said it will be a lot like an F150. I said I would hold off. So glad I did.

It will be interesting to see the acutal interst in the cyber truck. It is a 'new generaton' of drivers that they are targeting and that younger generation, oddly enough, has been able to 'afford' these more expensive vehicles. Not sure what their personal preferences are. With the 'social media' playing a big role in their lives, maybe the whole 'look at me' aspect of the cyber truck is appealing to them.

I recall a few years ago a large group of people arguing that SUVs were ridiculus looking and that the sedans would never go away. Yet, here we are...

Well let's not pretend that it came out on-time, on-budget, as-planned, priced as expected, etc.

I'm not sure how many people truly believed it would NEVER get produced, but it's fair to say the ride to get here has been filled with vapor, in the form of a lot of hot air. It's not entirely the vehicle that was promised (nor is any Rivian) and I think most of the discussion you talk about was aimed there - at the typical Elon bluster and bravado, not really that Tesla can't produce vehicles - obviously they can. Same stuff can be said about the updated roadster... Where is it? When were we supposed to get it? It's always best to take anytthing like this with a grain of salt.

None of this changes the fact that while the look is striking, it's just not attractive beyond a "EVERYONE LOOK AT ME, I'M IN A CYBERTRUCK! LOOK!" way. I agree with the OP's post and RJ's observation that I don't think the crossover in shoppers between a Rivian and a cybertruck is very large. And where it DID overlap - those people already got a Rivian because for a time Rivian was very much the "LOOK AT ME! I'M IN A RIVIAN!" vehicle they could get attention in.

First, I am a smart ass, not a "know it all"

Second, I believe I said that until it actually begins production and deliveries, it doesn't exist in the market. Which is just a fact. That is still true.

Third, most of us just think it is hilarious how excited the fans of the CT are over a truck that they actually know very little about. No price. No dimensions. No performance specs other than it can "tow infinite mass" and "function as a boat".

So I admit I get entertainment value from poking at that... because I am a smart ass

Seems there's a lot of hate for Tesla, and really for no reason than y'all being fanboys of rivian. Yes the concept of the Tesla cyber truck is unique, but literally y'all compare a well developed company to a startup. I'm sure the cybertruck will sell, either less or more than rivians, depending on the population. Remember, There's no test drive. We don't know how it'll handle or drive. All we have are rumors and pics. Who knows, it may handle better than the r1T.
