that’s just my guess, with model X at 80k now I think Rivian will have a hard time moving R1S at 90k+ and an indefinite wait
I really don't see how the X has any bearing on the R1S, it's not even the same class of vehicle.
They could have the standard pack Explore package for a more budget conscious buyer.

Throw that in the mix and you are pound foolish to order the S over an X.
The X has 0 appeal for many buyers, not to mention it is not a comparable vehicle. I suppose you would be equally or more foolish to buy any premium ICE SUV over a X as well then? This is where most buyers will gravitate from.

The Explore is unlikely to come out since they would need to take a good amount of cost out compare to the Adventure trim to make it attractive and profitable. The glass roof, wood trim, downgraded stereo, removal of cooled seats still don’t add upto that much of a saving.
The R1 is the flagship and I don’t think they should remove the items listed above to offer a slightly cheaper ($5000 maybe) price.

Like it or not the R1S and Model X are cross shopped all the time, and mostly by people gravitating from ICE vehicles. You are correct they are not identical vehicles, but the "family hauler" EV market is pretty thin right now so they are direct competitors. And the S has 0 appeal to many buyers also (especially at the comparable price net of tax credit).

You realize only the 5 seater Model X is eligible for the tax credit, right?

And most buyers of the R1S are above the income limit for tax credits, so they don’t really care.

I truly appreciate everyone for sharing their thoughts.

I have decided to purchase the quad-motor.

Congrats! You’re gonna love it!

Just don’t pull a Kramer, eh George?

Yeah, not happening.
agreed, very unlikely that this happens. the R1 was severely underpriced which is why the whole pricing fiasco happened. if Rivian had just done a gradual price increase over time i think most customers would have rode it out.

Tesla clearly is doing the price drop now on X/S because they know with the new model 3 and CT coming they are going to sell a ton of those vehicles and can take a temporary profit/margin hit on S/X to move those models since they are not selling right now. its almost a certainty that Tesla will raise the price again because otherwise they have screwed all the S/X owners who bought over the last 1.5-2 years. for now, this price drop is definitely going to sway some buyers away from the R1S

but i dont see Rivian lowering prices. what they are focusing on is lowering cost to increase margins per vehicles. thats what were going to continue to see.

yup, thats right. most buyers aren't looking at the R1S as an offroad capable vehicle. they are comparing them as 3 row family SUV EVs. that's basically these two. and now that Tesla has made the prices in the same range, even more are going to cross shop them. and theyre going to cross shop the Volvo EX90 and Kia EV9 very soon.

Does anyone know what the number of customers on the waiting list is for Rivian and Tesla? That should be a good indicator.

I don't think Rivian makes it public, but there are many model X's currently in stock so the number waiting on Telsa should be very low.

I agree with that. Another poster said that; my point is everyone has a style they like and one model isn't going to appeal to everybody. You can either drive an egg or a box. ?
