Those are the warranty coverages for the battery/drivetrain; the comprehensive (a.k.a. "bumper to bumper") warranty is 5yr/60k for quad vs. 4yr/50k for dual.
And, that matters more to me than 150K or 175K miles on the motors. Thanks!

An additional year of comprehensive warranty seals the deal for me. Now, the only question is whether to get the Quad-motor now or to wait for a possible price drop ...

I think the whole longer warranty is an overstated concern. I put money on that dual motors will be excellent long term.

Unless one has pre-pricing OR is planning on heavy off-roading, I would strongly recommend dual motors

Have R1S quad/large. I’ve actually been debating selling and ordering dual max whenever they announce availability of that configuration. Reason is that the improved range (albeit small) still fits 90% or more of my typical usage. When it come down to those close situations on a road trip, even 30-50 miles would be appreciated more than 200 extra horsies. I also don’t do any towing, at least not until the Lightyear L1 arrives!!!!

Oh man, you are not helping! :) Seriously, you meant that you would strongly recommend the dual-motor IF/WHEN there was a price drop below $80K, right? Thanks for sharing your perspective.

Price drops aren’t happening by Rivian. There is no need to.

Tesla’s price drops aren’t moving the needle for Rivian. That is, Rivian’s demand is largely not influenced by Tesla’s. There are still many MX available for sale and the available inventory hasn’t changed much (still 40+ available in my area):

Rivian is now going to be the new premium segment EV that people want, for both features and status. Tesla has lost both

I was saying if I were in the market now, I’d pick the slightly better range even if it delayed by a year. The dual/large offers a marginal gain, just have to wait until available. The dual/max would be my ultimate ideal config. The extra HP, while fun, pales in comparison to the times when I’ve decided to charge a little longer “just in case.” For me, all else being equal, range > HP.

I also agree with @DuoRivians that price cut probably unlikely. R2 on the horizon to attract more cost conscious segment.

Having exclusively driven EVs since 2014, I agree with you on prioritizing range over HP (well, at the levels we are discussing). If MAX pack were available in R1S any time soon (up to 6 months), I wouldn't care about the number of motors.

The longer bumper to bumper warranty is not just for the power train but covers everything else. All things being equal and extra year of warranty is a good thing.

Given the price difference is less than 10% and your getting an extra year on the comprehensive warranty and an extra 25k on the battery and electric drive I would go with quad motor and it's available sooner.

Secondly, Rivian has zero reason to drop price on quad motor. That's their flagship product. You may see them lower DM slightly to position for tax credit but quad motor very unlikely as no version of the quad motor comes in under 80k or even close. The cheapest T with quad motor is 87k.

Nothing is impossible but I wouldn't advise waiting around for price drops on quad if availability is important.

The $ difference is small - so Quad.
Price cut? Don’t rely on uncertainty.
Range? Go gentle when more needed.

I truly appreciate everyone for sharing their thoughts.

I have decided to purchase the quad-motor.

My reasons amounted to: (YMMV)
  • relatively small additional cost (at this time)
  • earlier availability
  • longer comprehensive car warranty
  • higher miles battery warranty
  • upcoming NACS compliance means that I can live with (I have lived with for many years!) the somewhat smaller range <-- if you haven't experienced the Tesla versus The Crap charging stations as I have, then you won't truly appreciate the difference between "It Just Always Works" versus "Miracle - This One doesn't seem to be Broken!" charging stations, but that's a topic for a different discussion.
  • better off-roading capabilities, I think (though either would get me to the hiking trails)

Selected one in the Shop. Now, the wait begins ... (anyone knows how long to get from IL to WA? :) )

Thanks !
