This discussion does bring a couple of questions to my mind that I haven't had the opportunity to test. Maybe someone here has tested the following?

  • Hitting the gate open button on the console, key fob, app, while moving
  • Hitting the frunk lid open button on the console, key fob, app, while moving (super hard to test because almost any movement would be enough wind to damage I think)
  • Hitting the door unlock on the console, key fob, app, while moving (assume the door handles would come out?)

Updated with Drive Cam video:

So I pick my wife up at the airport, and it's her first time riding in my R1S. I put her hard top suitcase, her back pack, and her jacket in the back of the R1S. I only opened the top door to do this, and left the bottom back door in the closed position. As I'm leaving the airport, I hit a stretch of straight road, glanced in my rearview mirror, and noticed there were not any cars behind me, so I came to a stop in the road. My wife asked me what I was doing, and I said, "Put your head on the back of the seat because I don't want you to hurt your neck, I'm going to blast off". She does, and I put the pedal to the metal to show off my 835 horsepower, and the zero to 60 thing in 3 seconds.

Well her suitcase was loose in the back of the car, and, as you can imagine, it slams with great force into the back doors when I took off. I wasn't thinking about this at the time, but it is to be expected. What I didn't expect is to notice about a quarter mile later down the road that the back doors were open. I quickly pulled over, and ran to the back of the R1S, when I noticed her suitcase, backpack, and jacket were no longer in the vehicle. I looked back to where we came from, and her stuff was in the middle of the road. Another couple had pulled over to gather my wife's belongings and place them on the side of the road. I rushed back to the scene of the incident, and collected her things.

It infuriated me that this happened, and could have been very dangerous for all your gear to leave your vehicle in front of other drivers, and could have been much worse. There was no messages from the R1S that my tailgate was not latched, but the force of the suitcase hitting the tailgate forced it open, and all items in the back of the R1S were ejected into the roadway. If this doesn't constitute a good reason for a recall, I don't know what does. I'm now scared to punch my accelerator pedal for fear that all my stuff will come flying out the back of the car. Beware, and I will be contacting Rivian Service Center, but hopefully someone important will read this and take action to contact me immediately. This is unacceptable.
I'm curious how well aligned your rear hatch is. From the factory mine was way off and it was clear that the rear doors were not closing all the way due to the misalignment. What I mean is that that latch system was not able to fully secure the doors. When closed, they both "wiggled" if you pushed on them. After I aligned my rear hatch doors properly (takes about 15 min and a few basic tools) both doors are now fully secure when the closed. The latches are securing the doors and the latches themselves are fully engaged.

This vehicle tells you when you fart..
Care to elaborate?
Just an old joke related to how modern vehicles monitor everything going on inside and out.

I believe the first time I saw that phrase was where Bolt owners couldn't believe there wasn't a "low washer fluid level" indicator on that car meanwhile it knew everything else that was going on in and around the vehicle.

LOL... see this thread that just popped up- according to the OP.. the R1 vehicles have a air quality sensor inside the vehicles, so the joke is on us.. they really could know if you farted :

Will the top portion of the tailgate close automatically without the lower portion up and latched? It looks to me like the upper gate was closed, but the lower half was down and open.
It will not automatically close when you press the close button if the tailgate is not fully latched into position, but you can manually pull it down.

However, when you lower the liftgate with the tailgate open, half of the rear camera view is filled by image of tailgate. From the video the OP posted, the tailgate was not down all the way.

Here is what the view looks like with tailgate open and liftgate closed.

Here is what the view looks like with the tailgate closed and the liftgate close. Note that you can see the license plate, tailgate, and bumper.

And here is the OP's footage. No license plate, no bumper. A full circle of road. The OP's liftgate had to be at least partially open before he floored it to get this view.

Just my guess from having similar issues with the tailgate setup, but I caught mine wasn’t latched. When you left the lower half up you may have hit the release button when you were placing her bags in the car and not realized it. Since the lower gate doesn’t automatically go down yet is unlatched it is just sitting there waiting to open. When you push the button for the upper half to close it’ll come down and not latch if the bottom part is not latched. It has a chime but being at a loud airports you may not have heard it. I think it would be good if where the top half closed they gave it enough power to fully close and latch both sections. That may be another safety issue because I can see people losing fingers if it had that much power. I just went out and placed mine in this condition. If the lower half isn’t latched you must manually close the top half. When placed in drive you get notification on the driver’s display.

This is clearly superior AI. Fight or flight response. R1S $#!+ itself and ran. Fast!

Tailgate latches to the side of the truck, the liftgate latches into the tailgate. I don't think a more powerful latch on the liftgate would be a guarantee to latch the tailgate.

Thanks for posting.
Certainly not saying that there may or may not be a latch or latching mechanism issue

But, having a work truck and truck for a good number of years, it is good standard practise to secure your load before travel at any speed, and is the reason most commercial vans have a steel divider between the driver and cargo area.

Something like this would be a good idea for the pickup and sounds like R1S too.
TBA I have one in my F150 and is the most used device in the truck bed box. Very versatile.

Or in the case of the R1S especially if you are going to "floor-it" https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81O1QDkfo5S.jpg

Awesome info - I wish you had also tested with the hatch open to some degree, but this confirms things were wide open before shit went haywire.

Meaning they had to drive through/out of the airport and never noticed that the hatch was open - not via dash warnings, chimes, checking your rearview mirror, and/or just a LOT more noise in the cabin - all of that was missed for this to have happened.

I find it hard to blame the vehicle if you can't see/hear the difference between the vehicle being sealed up or having a giant gap in the back even if every other safety/warning failed. You gotta own that a bit.
