Mine cost $1543.88 to replace.
Arsen auto body in San Jose.

Ouch.
Our tailgate topper dislodged soon after delivery. It came off with zero abuse
We’re scheduled for replacement .
Careful not to let anything touch your rear glass!
$4600 if it breaks

Do we have the same vehicle? I'm still baffled at the number of complaints on this. Mine is beat to hell and hasn't budged. Dragged things across it, chipped away, stood on it... She's still holding fine.
I've been thinking the same thing as I read this thread. My truck bed is beat to h*ll with concrete bags, lumber, tools, etc getting dragged across it on the regular and I've never dislodged any piece. Now my bed is scratched all up, but nothing has ever come off.

You are one of the few who might have the one from newer supplier

I pulled mine off once to investigate the inside of the tailgate for hanging a spare directly off the tailgate and it comes off really easily since then. The plastic holding the tabs on gets damaged from removal if you don't do it correctly, and doesn't secure very well after that.
We’ve never removed it
Clip tabs simply failed

Thanks for the heads-up on this issue. I will try be careful with that area of the bed. Could a few self tapping screws be added as a preventative measure?

I just had my tail gate trim piece replaced today. It was easily knocked off when I was pulling something out of the bed. The soft plastic tabs that hold it in place are way too soft and were just torn off with vey little resistance. Very annoying and expensive for me to have it replace. The trim piece was free, but the time off from work cost me $200.
I had a similar incident (no face plants or tongue biting, luckily)...RIVN is aware of this weakness and is designing a replacement...I have an outstanding ticket for it. I suggest you all do the same and put in a service claim

Sorry that happened to you, OP. I agree the trim piece can get very loose easily-- all Rivian clips are pretty janky generally.

I prop my butt on the tailgate and swing my legs in otherwise there’s no way I’m getting in via the tailgate.

I’ve considered duct taping across the rubber edge on the inside because it likes to get caught on stuff

An aesthetic solution, for sure

Mine is crap too and falls off all the time. My wifes Hyundai has similar problems where the only way to take plastic body panel parts off is to break all the clips and put a new one on.

So much for helping the environment with all this "single use" crap.

Stainless sheet metal screws are going to be my next choice.

I could see mine was a little loose so a little over a year ago, so as a preventative, I put a small bead of black silicone seal around the entire edge. Use a smoothing tool and you don't even notice it. It has been solid ever since and given no issues like popping up or coming off.
