As long CCS remains as difficult to use as it is, I won’t be able to use it without assistance. That will continue to be the case until I die, because disabilities are permanent. It isn’t myopic, it’s my life and millions of others life

So, buy a Tesla and don’t worry about ccs.

Or, try to appreciate the points we’re making before feeling good about simple short-sighted adoption of NACS. Ultimately, if NACS is the move forward, we want the end state to be one where Tesla doesn’t retain full control and industry competition is maximized so that consumers get cheapest to deliver kwh.

1) The intent of the first point was to communicate that Elon isn't a fan of 800v architecture nor is he a fan of bi-directional charging. If he doesn't see the value - he has no reasons to implement that architecture on Tesla Superchargers. That doesn't stop other 3rd parties who offer the NACS port from offering it, but here's the thing. He's starting from a position of a monopoly where Tesla owns, operates, and installs 100% of NACS charging, and 3rd parties will take years, maybe a decade, to come close to the number of chargers that Tesla has today. The only realistic game in town will be the Supercharger network.

2.) See my point above.

3/4/5 Until 3rd parties catch up, The Tesla Supercharger network (existing) is the only NACS game in town and it is NOT designed or optimized for non-Tesla vehicles. The charging experience at 3rd party NACS charging stations will be no different than 3rd party CCS charging stations because even if OEMS adopt NACS, they are not adopting Tesla software and so the same issues will apply. You are going to have a shitty user experience using NACS not part of the Tesla Supercharger network and that is by design.
Other networks have two years to add NACS plugs to their chargers. Since it’s “just a plug”, it should be possible to do whenever they replace a cable end. And stations with two cables at a dispenser (most of the older EA for example) could do it without impacting CCS vehicles.

When you say difficult to use, what do you mean exactly? The nozzle of a gasoline vehicle is bigger in dimensions and weight. Have you been unable to pump gas as part of your disability?

That is an honest question so that I can understand your point of view.

Meanwhile, this thread is NOT anti-NACS port. What many in this thread are doing is confounding the port with the experience of using a Tesla supercharger.

Fundamentally, outside of the size difference, there isn’t any difference functionally by adopting a different port. The issue now for CCS chargers isn’t that the port is so huge and so heavy, like I said if you can pump gas you can you can use a ccs charger, it is that the CCS system is run by a bevy of third parties who do a terrible job of keeping their chargers operational, not requiring complicated apps, and providing a good user experience.

This will not change if all of a sudden everyone switches to NACS. The White House NEVI funding is setting the framework for new charger rollout that will force rules to creat a much better experience.

The existing Tesla Supercharger network which is driving the excitement of most people responding in favor of adopting NACS is an absolute red herring.

1.) It is not designed for non Tesla vehicles! You don’t have the port on the correct side and the cable is too short. You will block multiple chargers and start inevitable fights.

2.) In parts of the country where there are the most EVs/Teslas the chargers are already overused and have lines of people waiting for them during peak hours. Google it,

3) Until new NACS chargers are rolled out either by Tesla or third parties it wil
be an absolute shit show. This will take years to do and even then your experience you don’t own a Tesla won’t change. The port being NACS will be no different. Plug and play is only for Tesla vehicles.

You’re not going to get all the things you want all the time my friend. Sometimes good is just better than perfect. Getting NACS and supercharger access is good.

Poll results are pretty decisive, Rivian Forums users want NACS! Let's hope Rivian sees the writing on the wall and starts working on a retrofit plan.

I'm sure we've all seen the very vocal (and small minority 1/5) RJ fanboys furiously attacking anyone who voted yes. It's not worth engaging the QuadRivian crew, they lose their minds anytime they hear the word Tesla.

Like Sass I also would like to know how you pump gas if you're disabled. Do you do it one handed? If so why do you have issues with CSS because I plug that in one handed. Are both of your hands disabled? If so how are you driving safely without the ability to grip the steering wheel? Is there some kind of adaptive device that helps with that? If so could one be made for charging as well?

When SAE, ASME/ANSI, ISO, DIN, CSA, etc make Tesla’s proprietary plugger part of a real standard, wake me. Otherwise CCS/J772 is juuuuust fine.
The EU has already chosen their standard and is ccs (ccs2 in Europe's case) . The EU forced Tesla to change to ccs for all sales in the EU. Just like they forced Apple to change to usb-c. They didn't millions trying to defend their proprietary charging system and lost. It doesn't matter if it is better or worse, they lost just as Tesla lost. Usa govt has made the choice that ccs is the standard, right or wrong

So I currently have an R1T on order and really love everything about Rivian and it is one of the reasons I have also invested a lot in them for the long haul. For me, I would love to simply be able to drive my R1T someday without having to make my destination choice based on the chargers available on my route. For example, if I wanted to travel south from Pittsburgh to Lake James North Carolina, or to Watts Bar Lake in TN while towing my boat, as I do every summer, I would not be able to if I drive my R1T like I can today with my ICE vehicle. There is plenty of SuperChargers along the route but for some reason, WV doesn't have any DC Fast along any major highways such as I-79. I am set up to home charge so local stuff for me is okay. But road trips on the east coast while towing is a nightmare. Even though as a former owner of both GM and Ford vehicles I have zero plans to go back to those brands. For me right now I am just trying my hardest to delay my R1T until something gets better whether it be more CCS or a partnership between Rivian and Tesla for the use of their superchargers.

I'm curious what Europe will do since they made ccs the standard and forced tesla to use that. Tesla could have allowed this year's ago but didn't. Their plug is smaller and nicer but all the cables are way to short for almost every other brand. The reason their chargers work better is that it was all made by 1 mfg and every thing is compatible. He's a smart guy, and will do what he thinks is right for him. I also believe he's doing the right thing at Twitter. Freedom of speech is a big deal.

This post is dumb on so many levels. It reads as wild anti Musk/Tesla Hysteria. North america is about to have the best most reliable charging system the world. One that is an open standard and not controlled by Elon Musk. Rivian will either be a part of it or will fade away into obscurity.

I think this is pretty region dependent. Where I go, most Tesla Superchargers are pretty empty. Taking up two stalls for 20 minutes wouldn't be an issue! All the Tesla owners I know are super stoked about NACS becoming the standard. It means more money to build more superchargers, and more 3rd party charging options for Tesla without using an adapter!
You have described the availability of charging in your location now. What happens when you show up at the same station in 2024 and it is filled with non-tesla vehicles that are blocking half the chargers?

I think human nature will take over at that point and you are not going to be pleased, especially if you were expecting to use a charger that Tesla told you was available.

Good for Rivian…doubtful, good for me you bet it is! I charge at home and own Tesla stock! It’s gonna screw the rest of the ev vehicles as it will create a tiered system.

Europe isn't doing anything. They could absolutely care less what we do in the US. They have the largest EV market share in the world and they forced standardization to CCS years ago across their infrastructure. All Tesla's in Europe use CCS. They also have a standards body - and the charging experience in Europe is hands down better than the US all with CCS architecture.

The issue isn't the port - it is how you standardize the user experience which is what the WH is doing with Billions in NEVI funding.
