I'm curious if anybody has tried out a Yakima Longarm on their R1T: https://yakima.com/products/longarm

I'd like to get one for my kayaks, but I'm not sure if the gooseneck tailgate on the R1T will interfere with the Longarm. If nobody has tried I might make myself the guinea pig to find out.

The first thing you need to establish is what those "three distinct load-carrying positions" line up with.

If they don't line up with something useful, such as the height of the rack on the cab, you might not like the results.

I use something similar to the MaxxHaul you linked.

Has worked great for me on two trucks now and is 13 years old. I didn't love how much it rattled with just using the quick release pins to change the width and I also realized I never needed to change the width, so I replaced the quick release pins with some 3/4" bolts within a month of buying it and have never looked back.

It worked, but I didn't find it stable enough for the high load position and had to use cross-lines to hold it steady.
Hi thanks for your comment from a couple years ago. I'm considering the longarm to help with transporting a tandem kayak, I'm thinking in its highest position it would make loading solo easier and I would be less likely to have an accident that cracks the glass roof. Do you still use it and/or have any different thoughts on it? Thanks!

Thanks for sharing @bgmaxey!

I'm thinking about maybe grabbing something less expensive, like this Maxxhaul: https://www.amazon.com/MaxxHaul-70231-Extender-Ladder-Lumber/dp/B01D4CXIKY/ref=sr_1_5?crid=18LNOYJRPB4T1&keywords=truck+bed+extender&qid=1684248459&sprefix=truck+bed+extende,aps,93&sr=8-5&ufe=app_do:amzn1.fos.18ed3cb5-28d5-4975-8bc7-93deae8f9840

My goal is to try and load two 12' kayaks in the bed, or just one. I like to take solo trips to go fishing, so its a lot easier for me to get the kayak into the bed vs onto the roof.
Hi thanks for the post, I'm considering buying the long arm. What did you end up buying and would you do it again? Thanks!

I have used the long arm to haul two 12 feet Hobie Outbacks - and it has worked fine. the bed provides almost 7 ft of support and the long arm additional couple of feet with 2-4 feet hanging beyond that.

Thanks! That is good to hear. Have you ever tried it with the extender in the vertical position? I’m wondering how closely it lines up with the cargo bars on the roof.

No, it was much easier for us to haul the Hobies in the bed than lifting all the way to the roof.
