Which makes it software and not part of the IRS $80k cap.
Hmm...that conflicts with what mine told me! I really wish they would all be on the same page! This is what I was told

"Hi Eric,

Thanks for reaching out! The Performance Dual-Motor isn't something that can be added after purchase, so you would need to configure it now if you'd like the Performance Dual-Motor."

I'm getting the 21" for the range only, love the look of the 20's but I don't want to pay extra for the wheels and tire, and then pay for another set of tires just to get the same range again....are there even All seasons you can get on those 20's that will get you back up to the same range or better?

Currently there doesn't seem to be any choice on replacements for the 21's either, and manufacturer tires always suck and don't last worth @#$@!
Yup. Two people on the forum have installed Michelin Defenders and Pirelli Scorpion AS+3’s and seen range similar to and in the case of the Pirelli, better than the 21s ??‍♂. Do what works best for you but considering the all season replacements are around $150 cheaper than the OEM 21, I’m going with the 20s when the time comes.

Sure, but what’s the ETA on delivery? Mine says “processing”. I just paid into the RAM rev preorder “club” which is late 2024 ETA for an estimated 500 mile range vehicle. I also have a Hummer EV reservation and 2 Cybertruck reservations. At this rate Rivian will simply lose many of their preorders to the competition and end up with many preorder vehicles flipped/traded.

The R1T store is packed right now. Hard to imagine people having the patience to continue waiting indefinitely when you can get something in 6-8 weeks with pretty decent range specs.
Same here, if the max pack isn't 180kwh I'll sell my launch edition and get the ram 500mile option.

The Church of the Max Pack is strong. Tanya, famous Rivian spokesperson and the bringer of the 180kWh, is our patron saint.

Rivian’s site does specifically state that Performance is a software upgrade:

https://stories.rivian.com/difference-between-r1-drive-systems

But it doesn’t say anything about purchasing it as an add-on later. It would be stupid of them not to allow that though, due to the number of people wanting to keep the MSRP under $80k.

Yeah, totally agree, I switched back to the performance after getting that question answered with a No....not sure if this person doesn't know, or they are trying to get the dollars up front? Maybe I will switch back to the non-enhanced. Really wish they would be clear, because it makes it more than a 2500 difference, because you can't get the $7500 credit, unless you choose a free color.

My guide told me it would be available after delivery as an upgrade. To quote him:

"The Performance Dual Motor will be able to be either configured or purchased afterward as an upgrade."

Hopefully, they keep the pre and post-delivery pricing the same.

Rivian would be stupid to not make it software upgradable.

A 4.5 second EV is a very fast vehicle

There's precedent for post delivery software updates. Tesla did it with the Model 3, an acceleration boost or something on the long range dual non-performance. I can't remember the exact phrasing. Software also unlocked extra battery capacity early Model S's.

Polestar offers a software enabled performance upgrade as well.

Tesla has two levels. Accerlation boost which can be purchased after purchase and is entirely software. Then there is the performance version of the vehicle which is only at manufacturing.

Tesla used to claim that the performance motors received extra validation.

I don't think performance buyers have another software level they can purchase, but I'm not sure.

I have a feeling there will be more options soon for 21”.

I am wondering if this isn't a mistake from Rivian or the 274 factors in the RUS. Wasn't 274 miles the original range for the 20's before they updated it to the current EPA 289. The configurator seems to have reverted back to the 274 without explanation. That is a ~5% hit. So maybe purchasing a dual/max with 21s and then putting 20s from the gear shop (or an older R1 a person may be trading in) would net a range closer to 350 miles with the 20s and AT tires. That would also mean 315 for a dual/Large. so the 10k Max upgrade is still only 35 miles, but the top end range number at 350 seems like a better deal than 335.

Here is the current 2023 R1T EPA page for reference. They break out all 3 wheel option here. The 21s and 22s match the EPA site, but the 20s are lower.

E-mail them, might be an error.

I'd gladly trade longer range for less power. Seriously, why do EVs need 700, 800, 900 HP? They would be plenty fast with 400 HP and would probably get significantly better range, all else equal.

They actually probably wouldn't get noticeably better range by decreasing the power level. Electric motors are so efficient at creating work, it's not like an ICE where much of the energy is lost as heat. This is primarily the reason a PHEV range extender would be the best case scenario for current battery tech.

Don't push your right foot as far and you'll get the same result. Don't punish the rest of us if you don't want 700hp+ ?

I do wish that Rivian had a 'chill' mode like Tesla has though.
