I don't think this is a software problem. We have 1 insurmountable obstacle and one somewhat solveable 1.

1. The truck is heavy as all fuck, this is going to hurt stopping/turning performance on slick surfaces. As much as people might hate on Munro/etc for suggesting changes to 'cheapen' the R1, some of these changes that save cost also save significant weight, making for a better vehicle not just a worse one.

2. The OE Pirelli AT tires are hard, very hard. Go poke your finger into a snow tire, it's much much softer by design. Rubber needs to flex quite a bit to raise the biting edge of the tire (which snow tires also have many more of.) The weight partly demands a harder tire for decent lifespan but also AT tires tend to be built more for durability than flex or noise optimization, so get a snow tire if this is unacceptable to you.

I agree, which is how I found out about my issue with the 20s. However, Rivian's official answer to unlocking the wheels if they are sliding because of a regen situation is to accelerate. So if you encounter an unexpected slide (like this), ABS isn't available unless you accelerate first, and then quickly get to the brake before the wheels lock again.
Same... every winter storm event conditions are a bit different so I always do a few performance tests when I first set out after a storm and adjust accordingly. Only needed this a few times so far but the R1T on 20" AT is not confidence inducing. My 3 previous Subaru's performed better which is a shame. I do think a lot of it is weight related but I also think tires with finer sips and "snow mode" could improve things substantially.

I see black ice. Maybe that contributed? Snow pack should have built up enough resistance to help turn. Alas, being 3k heavier, maintaining direction will be more difficult. Physics wants you to maintain course.
Yeah, loose snow on top of ice is the worst to drive on.

What are we eating and watching?
Sourdough pizza puttanesca with Brussels sprouts, gouda, shishito peppers and red onions. Dessert is a lime curd on graham cracker topped with cranberries and pistachio pralines. All home made. TV is on the Great British Baking Show.

I always take time the first snowfall to get to know how a new vehicle is going to behave in situations that aren't perilous. I'm probably in a minority here but it's super important to know these things and learn how to control the vehicle to avoid unwanted situations.
You're describing exactly what happened here for the OP! Except the end result.

According to some here in the forum, there is no problem at all with the way these tires on this truck handle on snow/ ice and it’s all just driver error and you don’t know how to drive on your own driveway :asshat:

Please, Rivian….snow mode:D
And there are others who believe otherwise without actual experience themselves that Rivian is going to sprinkle the magic pixie dust of snow mode over the truck and no one will ever hit a tree coming out of there driveway ever again. I jest! I look forward to seeing how the coming snow mode works. It doesn't sound like there will be a No Regen option...which is kinda a bummer.

I love popcorn! But you are right. My popcorn is from whole kernels (not a microwave bag) oil popped and coated with a spritz of agro di mosto balsamic vinaigrette, salt and nutritional yeast.

It's in the puttanesca underneath. Before adding other layers:

I had to do something with my insane harvest of cherry tomatoes from late October.

I was jesting as well. Who knows how well snow mode (aka “magic pixie dust :CWL: ) will actually work? Between the heavy truck, the tires, regen, and driving habits I don’t believe any one thing will solve the problem entirely. Nothing is that simple! I just feel like snow mode should help.

Oh definitely only from whole kernels! I buy the Bob’s Red Mill popcorn and pop it with avocado oil and add salt. I’m a purist.

Looks delicious!

If you are seriously going to look into winter sets, take a look at the Toyo Open Country WLT1. Harder compound, made specifically for heavier loads and have deeper tread than most winters. Which all means they last longer and better in deeper snow. Plow guys love them. Nothing better than Hakkas, have them on other cars. But I suspect they will wear terrible on R1. And if you do switch to an LT tire, make sure they are properly inflated (door placard won't work, will be too low) to have the equivalent weight rating as the ATs. I think the Toyo's required 58 psi to be same load index equivalent. Anyways, just gotta look it up on a load chart online.

They are! My experience with OE Pirelli ATs is they weren't 1/2 bad in a straight line going and stopping but lateral was pretty terrible.

Bummer, will be interested to see if the snow mode in the next update helps that.

Good news is looks like a good PDR guy can fix that for you. I had a similar dimple in the tank on my Harley that the guy pretty much made disappear.
