My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I scanned this video hoping to see an Influencer standing on their roof only to quite suddenly scream and crash into the cabin in a storm of glass.

Now I’m disappointed. Thanks Internet.

If you go back and watch the original video you will get to watch her manhandle a normal camping tent into the bed of the truck to achieve "truck camping"

I had a couple Land Rover go through hail storms back in New Mexico (hail the size of ping pong ball a few times and once that looked like tennis balls - probably not but it really did look like it). The glass roof stood up to the test.
… I might even have gone a couple times on the roof myself (not standing) for various (not good) reasons and nothing broke (despite the disclaimers in the owner’s manual).
I agree with you all, the roof should be much more solid than it seems to be.

The worst thing IMO was Rivian blaming the driver for the break. I've had that happen before with other companies and it completely kills any good feelings I had towards them. They don't need to disclose that this is a systemic/design/quality issue to the owner, but the last thing they should do is BLAME them. Especially if they cracked 2 brand new roofs trying to install it. Their response is very worrying to me.

Wow. This is a really bad look for Rivian, while it may be.. questionable to stand on your pano roof it should ABSOLUTELY have no problem holding that weight. I wonder if this is an issue with the panel itself or a design flaw in how it's seated in the roof.

For real world impact, if you're out offroading and a branch falls on your roof is it going to hold up? Literally saw this happen to a delivery truck yesterday. They were fine, the roof held up, will the Rivians?

There's a phrase I think is applicable here: Don't borrow trouble. Especially insured trouble.

If you're going to design in a glass roof, shouldn't it more capable, more tempered? And, if they're breaking IN THE SERVICE CENTER, doesn't that tell you something?

With all the issues reported here and other places, Rivian will have a ton of recall campaigns to deal with. They should be proactive and implement fixes right away.

It's an adventure vehicle, so would this fall within the "intended use" disclaimer?

If my roof can't keep the lions out I'm not sure it's an "adventure" vehicle lmao

I've found that not leaving the vehicle exposed is the best way to prevent hail damage. Has never failed me, I've never had a vehicle hit by hail using this method and I live in an area that has above average frequency and severity of hail.
Do you never actually drive anywhere? Or do you just only drive places fancy enough that there is garage parking at *every* location? It seems unavoidable to just never leave the car outside if you actually use it at all.

You think the worst thing is Rivian blaming the driver? When someone literally sat on a glass roof that isn’t made to be sat on? This wasn’t a spontaneous break.

And her sitting on top of a Model X isn’t comparable. The Model X doesn’t have an uninterrupted glass roof like the R1T.

While the roof may not be as strong as it could be (yet to be determined), I think it’s a little ridiculous to be upset with Rivian for blaming the driver when user misjudgment absolutely played a role.

That's pretty tough to do when the hail occurs in the middle of the work day and you have no covered parking anywhere for miles.
Does the truck not come with one of these in the gear tunnel?

Where is it documented that the glass roof wasn't made to be sat on? Or leaned on? Or touched? What is the limit of reasonable expectation here? Couldn't find that anywhere in the owner's guide. It is documented that you shouldn't pour hot water in cold weather but I don't see anything about load expectations for glass surfaces.

Yea no.

First post on thread is about a crack when user had no interaction with it and the post linked shows the owner leaning on the edge to wash it down.
What is ridiculous is seeing this occurring more and people still saying "yet to be determined" while owners are paying $1800+ for putting their hand on it to wash.

How difficult would it be for Rivian to make/offer a solid roof option that could be easily dropped right into the current roof opening? At one time weren’t they going to offer a removable roof panel? I would be all in for ditching the glass roof, altogether.
