In the R1S manual it says the rear car seat strap should go over the headrests. I’ve never seen anyone do that before in an SUV. The straps always go under the headrests. It appears that how RJ’s family installs car seats as well. Any reason you think the manual wants the straps over the seats?

I believe the headrests aren't adjustable on the rear seats, so there's no way to get the strap under them.

Also, RJ is probably using a split-tether, which I believe most car seats have these days (it's been several years since I had to use one).

The biggest miss by Rivian on the R1S is lack of external button to open the hatch and an internal button to close it. Who wants to pull something out of their pocket or purse to operate the hatch.

I seriously hope this is just an oversight in the manual and not with the vehicle itself. I can't think of a single SUV that doesn't have a way to open the liftgate from outside the vehicle without a key fob or app, even those that are fully manual and don't have a motorized open and close mechanism. I have to believe there's a button hidden near the license plate and they simply forgot to label it.

I completely agree. But I'm concerned that Rivian may not have any gate buttons, in a myopic design decision of "We have all these remotes - Buttons? We don't need no stinking buttons!"

Unfortunately, there's evidence of this "minimilistic" design philosophy- minimal buttons on the dash, automated vent direction control, non-adjustable headrests, etc.

I do not think its an oversight. Page 137 is pretty clear with how to open and close the hatch. What an awful decision by the Rivian team.

They added a button to open the frunk -- even when many other EVs don't do this. I would find it incredibly strange if they dropped the button to open the tailgate!

Good observation ... let's hope this is a user manual oversight for the R1S! Plus, how would you adjust the opening height if there is no internal button??? This would be a disaster for those with lower ceilings. I adjust my vehicles to about 1 inch before hitting the garage door.

I’m hoping this is an oversight in the manual. I recall reading somewhere that the nhtsa requires a way to access egress points from the outside in emergency situations so I’m guessing they have a button? Or they’ve got a big recall on their hands potentially if they launch without it.

Also disappointing for the kiddos: Four cup holders in total. Zero in the third row.

EDIT: These appear to be cup holders but they aren't specified in the section about them. Thanks @drivetorun

Cringing at the melted crayolas in my rear cupholders, I'm slightly glad they don't have them back there.

some analysis in owners forum. Seems correct. Shows a button on the under lip area to close and based on the gate design that button should be accessible when closed.

Are the door handles labeled? How about the button for the frunk? I’m assuming it’s not labeled, because of course, there’s a button for the trunk. Maybe it’s not an oversight, but they just aren’t labeling obvious things.

Rivian did label the "tires" in the R1T manual.... So I wouldn't say they don't label obvious things.

Let me see if I can find the reference. If I can find it I will edit this post.

It was in one of the things I was reading about the new in house motors and new 800 volt architecture. It did not specifically say not in the 400 volt architecture but the way it was worded certainly implied pretty hard it was a new Interface that allows for bidirectional charging.

Edit,

Here is where I read it does not exist in current hardware. Neither of these are definitive but the way they read certainly leans that way;

Near the end of this article they talk about developing bidirectional components and chargers.

This article also references it as new technology.

Edit 2: Here is the verbiage from the Rivian Shareholders letter that was what really made me fairly certain it is not in the current architecture. I’d love to be wrong, just reading between the lines….

This 800-volt architecture also includes an integrated on-board charger, DC to DC converter, and DC to AC converter, where the power stages of the DC-AC and AC-DC are bi-directional
Here is an article that Rivian said that the trucks were designed from the start to upgrade to 800 volts.
