In regards to the tailgate/crossbars loading discussions - I would point out that the dynamic load rating of the rooftop crossbars isn't that high and if you're talking about stacking 8ft+ 2x4s up there, you're not going to get very many before you max out that load rating. You'd likely be able to fit more of them in the back.

That said, I agree, the R1S seems to function the same way every other SUV does, so I'm not sure why people are disappointed. If you need to haul a metric ton (literally or not) of lumber and don't want to make multiple trips, rent a trailer or get an R1T instead :) Not every vehicle will be perfect for every use case, so prioritize yours accordingly.

Oh yes, f*** anyone for not wanting to lose features they e come to rely upon in other vehicles. Rubes!
Are these issues that big of a deal???

Everything is relative, I get that people have different perspectives about what's important and what's not, but at the end of the day Rivian designed the vehicle a certain way and, barring things that can be changed entirely by software, it is what it is at this point.

I have no problem with anyone wanting independent rear HVAC, but I would hope everyone complaining at least understands that it adds cost and complexity for what is largely a minor improvement in passenger comfort that most people don't need most of the time, which is likely why Rivian chose not to implement it.

Same goes for folding seatbelts - it's cool that Tesla spent the money to integrate seatbelts into the rear seats, but it's an uncommon design choice for obvious structural reasons and it's largely unnecessary when a couple simple plastic clips achieve the same effect. Tesla also choose to go with Falcon doors for whatever reason, so needless cost and complexity was kind of their thing with the X.

For cupholders, want as many as you want, but before complaining there aren't enough at least consider that the various cup and bottle holders provided were almost certainly focus grouped with representative buyers and found to be entirely sufficient for most people's needs.

For the tailgate, I'm surprised anyone would expect the bottom tailgate could be left open with the top closed, considering how every other split tailgate works, but no problem if that's your thing! Just understand before complaining that they're not designed that way because it creates an inherently dangerous situation for anything in the vehicle that's not properly secured to fall out the back.

Many of the complaints people have seem to lack perspective and consideration for the many design trade offs that have to happen when building a new vehicle.

My issue isn't the absence of the feature, but rather the (reasonable) assumption that it would be there. Rivian demo'd a rear screen that appeared to let passengers set their own temperature. So I think the public disappointment is reasonable when it is discovered that the screen was effectively a ruse.

Lack of promised bi-directional charging is going to be a deal breaker for me.
It does not appear to be in the 400 volt architecture but very much appears to be in the next 800 volt architecture vehicles.

Please go ahead and cancel your pre-order. I won't mind at all. ?

Thanks.

HUD is useless (literally invisible) if you are wearing polarized sunglasses, like you should be.
Sometimes when driving my Mazda at night I'm reminded how cool the HUD is, because that's generally the only time I see it.

So now I can’t choose what vehicle features are important to me and I can’t even choose my preferred sunglasses? I can’t tell if you’re serious or kidding/using hyperbole. If serious, please read my earlier post here. Then keep in mind that what’s right for you is not necessarily right for every other human being on the planet.

I think you're the type of person who wants the features of a $150k car for $75k. Let me guess, you complained to Rivian about the pre-order price increase, didn't you?
Since when was HUD a $150k+ feature? I've seen HUDs in vehicles costing <1/3rd that price.

I missed where it was confirmed to be excluded, what's the reference?

This depends on the HUD and the sunglasses. It is variable. If it's important see the HUD and wear polarized lenses you can generally tilt your head a bit to read the HUD, or try a different brand of sunglasses

The difficulty in reading LCD screens and HUDs is one of the reasons that non-polarized sunglasses are strongly preferred for flying and generally preferred for driving. Polarized glasses are most useful for watersports, especially fishing.

Let me see if I can find the reference. If I can find it I will edit this post.

It was in one of the things I was reading about the new in house motors and new 800 volt architecture. It did not specifically say not in the 400 volt architecture but the way it was worded certainly implied pretty hard it was a new Interface that allows for bidirectional charging.

Edit,

Here is where I read it does not exist in current hardware. Neither of these are definitive but the way they read certainly leans that way;

Near the end of this article they talk about developing bidirectional components and chargers.

This article also references it as new technology.

Edit 2: Here is the verbiage from the Rivian Shareholders letter that was what really made me fairly certain it is not in the current architecture. I’d love to be wrong, just reading between the lines….

“This 800-volt architecture also includes an integrated on-board charger, DC to DC converter, and DC to AC converter, where the power stages of the DC-AC and AC-DC are bi-directional“

First, you seem awfully antagonistic / combative to me and I’m not here to fight with anyone. If it’s just that you’re having a bad day I hope it gets better.

No, I don’t want the features of a $150k car for $75k. In fact, I want at least the features of a $50,000 SUV built in 2006 for the $80K SUV I configured. The same features and much more would be available on a 2022 Land Rover Defender which is in the same ballpark as an R1S with today’s prices.

I’ve consistently said that the Rivian was a great value before the pricing debacle and I think it’s still a good value even at the new pricing.

No, I didn’t complain to Rivian about the price increase. No, I didn’t cancel my order. While not thrilled with a ~$19K price increase for my same config, I was planning to eliminate a paint upgrade and an accessory and keep the order in play.

So, basically, you’re incorrect in every point you raised in the quoted post. You’ve proven my point that some people seem to think that they know everything about others and, further, should be able to dictate what preferences are correct and incorrect for them.

edit: clarity
