looks like they are making changes in anticipation of the configurator opening. The "Design Yours" link goes to the R1 configurator for now.

It has taken so long. Like I still can't fathom that they are expecting to deliver next month with no configurator yet. Kind of a big deal considering we don't know the price for the add ons and options will be. I guess they got really burned last time and are being as conversative as possible with timing releases. I get it but also I'm impatient lol

My guess is there's no options to configure on LE except "what color paint" really so they'll just slot the already made cars to whatever people configure.

Suspect June deliveries will be influencer vehicles only. Still "customers" so there's that. They'll take whatever Rivian hands to them to get their first reviews in.

I'm reading this as real deliveries won't begin until July or August. Even if Rivian builds a few hundred inventory units they spread across maybe 8-10 states that's up to 50 per state if 500 get pre-built? And I suspect those will be available the first few weeks of July - and only after showrooms get their floor and demo models.

The way this is shaping up, it seems that all the real 'production' R2's will be Gen 3 with LiDAR in the fall which makes a lot of sense. Who wants to drop $60-65K on a vehicle that will be obsolete in just a couple of months?

And wheel / tires. But I think there will only be two choices. Keep those SKU's down.

It's just so interesting to me they couldn't get Gen3 into R2 a few months earlier. Just so weird to ramp a few cars with Gen2 and then a few months later change it all to Gen3...tooling isn't cheap.

Nope, because production realities. There will be kinks in production they will have to work out- that takes some weeks. I would be shocked, SHOCKED if the Lidar R2 enters production before 2027, and most likely a year from now, if then.

There are plenty of potential customers who have zero interest in Lidar, and who would much rather have a more conventional vehicle (if an EV can be considered conventional ;) ) and avoid paying the higher sticker for the Lidar.

I do believe the Lidar R2 will hit before the R3, and like that vehicle, the Lidar R2 has been revealed, but not yet put into production. It's a signal to investors and, to a lesser extent, potential customers where Rivian is headed. (And consider how long now, since the R3 has been revealed, yet Rivian remains vague on when it will launch -- if you think R2 customers have been impatiently awaiting the coming of the R2, think of what the R3 customers must feel!)

Now a curious question is whether the R3 will be equipped with Lidar, or have the Lidar as an option, at launch or, more likely, when the Gen 2 R3 is launched. Likewise, will the R3 launch before the Gen 3 R1, and will the Gen 3 R1 come with Lidar? Rivian has been mum on whether/when Gen 3 R1 can be expected.

RJ said R2 will ship with LIDAR before EOY, perhaps right after LE trim is done. Whether that actually happens or not remains to be seen but that’s what he promised.

I'm pretty sure that Rivian/RJ has stated that R3 is gonna come online when the Georgia factory does, which right now is scheduled for 2028. Obviously that date can slip, but it's not "vague", more that it's just dependent on something else first.... and something that was delayed due to outside interference.

Regarding lidar, I think that the current R2 bodies have the spot for the lidar sensor - it's just being covered up in these initial models with a filler part.

RJ has addressed this in several online videos. The development of the tech stack had to remain on its own timeline, supply chain not an insignificant factor - to the point they couldn't delay R2 any longer. Ideal? No - but, given the other recent announcement about next-gen development of LIDAR, just as well that R2's horse isn't hitched to that wagon if LIDAR dev takes even longer.

Please remind me, how many "influencers" got to buy a R1 before everyone else?

This time around, all the Rivian "influencers" have very early reservations, just like many of the rest of us. And yes, you'll be hearing from them early on, because they are in need of attention. That doesn't equate to them getting bumped to the front of the line.

But Rivian does not have any history of selling the first hundreds or even thousands of vehicles to "influencers" like you suggest. That's an entirely different thing than having a small fleet available for loan to various outlets for review and publicity (which is already happening, BTW).
