Hi all, While half of the country is freezing with us here in Denver, I just thought you might appreciate my cold-drive update video (compared to last year's). I preconditioned the R1T but didn't precondition the R1S and drove them both to compare. Tip: Preconditioning helps a lot.

Stay warm and DRIVE SAFE!!

I thought I saw a Rivian in front of me on Saturday.. I was like 4-5 vehicles behind you, merging from 85 to I76, on my way home with my Brand New Rivian..

That poor Mustang.... They dont call em sidewinders for nothing!

Matches my experience. After 20 to 30 minutes a cold battery will have warmed up. Some hard regen or downhill action can help to.

This is pretty much exactly the result I get when I manually precondition the truck, versus doing nothing. Have not tried the new preconditioning schedule feature in 50.01.

Great being able to side by side, test the difference. Also, so jealous you didn't have to choose between the S/T ?

Which "child" is your favorite?

Exactly what I experienced.

I’m loving the cold weather performance.

I used pre-condition feature and the update came just in time for 14 degree temps.

Before warming up the vehicle, cabin temps showed 41 degrees in my garage.

I’m getting 1.91 mi/kWh on 20” AT driving mainly on the highway between 65 mph and 74 mph. This is with snow mode which has low regen.

current temps outside show 19 degrees on the dash with battery at 53 degrees.

Rivian R1T R1S Tested: Preconditioning actually helps (duh) in cold weather driving! IMG_7313

How much energy did it use to pre-condition?

Was it worth the efficiency gain over the length of the drive?
Right. To me its a no brainer to pre-condition if plugged in. But how about when not? How does it impact range and is there some over/under on miles when it is worth it.

IMO pre conditioning the battery is more about getting the most range when setting off. I don't know if I'd bother on short trips.. but maybe I'm wrong.

Something must be wrong with my rig, because I have pre conditioned 3 times now, and each session has ended up with 47 percent range reduction and roughly a 1.19-1.31 rate.

I have a question. It's 7 degrees F this morning. I'll probably want to use battery preconditioning before I drive. I have four motors. The way I understand it, heat from the motors is used to heat the battery. This can be done when the car isn't moving. So, are the motors actually spinning in "neutral" or are they magnetically locked or something so they don't spin. Did I miss the memo on this?
