This was my first trip where supercharging the R1S was actually needed/critical.

About 900 miles and 500 kwh's (1.8 MPK), did some trickle charging (level II), Level III charging was $90 ($0.10 per mile).

Using the RAN chargers was the best (Manteca/Santa Nella/Buttonwillow), charge time was ~25 minutes at each, typically under 25 minutes (unless getting food).
LocationNetworkMinutes Charging / ActivityKwh added ($)
AtascaderoElectrify America0:23 / Bathroom break and shopping51 ($22.5)
MantecaRivian0:15 / Charging only51 ($18.5)
Santa NellaRivian0:36 / In-n-out lunch73 ($26)
ButtonwillowRivian0:24 / Bathroom break and snacks65 ($23.5)
All-in-all a great experience, in 16.5 hours of driving w/charging only about an hour of that was spent waiting for the car to charge...

Didn't need/get to go to any Tesla superchargers since UPS lost the A2Z adapter, so waiting to see what happens with that...

I was worried that charge time for the R1S would be an issue, but that's not at all the situation...didn't have to wait for a stall at any of the locations...

But at 2 of 3 RAN chargers I did see R1Ts charging in the trailer spots with non-trailer spots open...(and a R1T towing a trailer using the non-trailer charge spot)....

Is this common? A bummer if it is...

A+ thread title
Yes, it's a famous theme popularized by a certain Tesla fanboy...whose Rivian was saved by none other...

But if I’m being honest, I did get 50kwh from a free Tesla L2 charger in a mall…

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
The restaurant at the hotel next to the Santa Nella charger is fantastic. I don’t know what it is about the vibe, but I love the place. Breakfast was great. Not a lot of options, so was stoked to see the most convenient was also excellent.

Mall gives the free power, not Tesla.

Great info, thanks! I think sometimes when we see people in charging areas like towing spots or “handicap, use last” spots are people who went to those spots because it was the only thing available at the time, walked away to do something and other people left m making them look like goofballs. Not always, but I’m trying my best to give people the benefit of the doubt. I would hope that for me in that circumstance. If they are taking those spots on purpose, they need to be slapped and forced to trade in their Rivian for a Tesla! ?

It wasn’t busy at all, so I’d say for sure they parked there for convenience…people are people regardless of the make/model carrying them around…just an observation. I’ll continue avoiding those towing stalls when others are available and I’m sure many others will continue to use them…Maybe Rivian can come up with a reservation feature for anyone who is towing (vehicle should be able to recognize when it’s towing and setup a reservation), that would be really cool/useful…

I too recently did a road trip and was pleasantly surprised at the zero problems I had at the RAN sites. Great job Rivian! I stopped at Santa Nella and Buttonwillow and didn't experience any problems with the the chargers or folks charging or blocking any spots. For a 700+ mile roundtrip, my charging costs were less than $110. There's no way I would have gotten close to that in my 3 row ICE SUV. One interesting thing during the trip was I managed to break 3 kW/h on multiple occasions. It shocked me so much, I engaged Driver+ just to take a snapshot.

Must have been a significant tailwind, my best guess anyway…

This actually happened to me twice at the Sac RAN. Full when I got there, empty when I got back from the bathroom. I was close to done, so I just stood outside the truck, ready to swap stalls if a handicapped or trailer user showed up (no one did).

I have to think most who park in spots reserved for others are experiencing tunnel vision and wouldn’t park there if they knew what they were doing. The others just don’t care.

I continue to believe karma is at play.

I would agree. There is only one DCFC that I regularly go to, which has pull-through chargers. I think the first time I went there (not long after I got my R1T) I used a pull-through lane (it's just easier). Afterward, I realized that should be the last resort, in order to keep it available for someone pulling a trailer.
The way it is designed (and the fact that it is fairly close to the Walmart entrance), means that it is just as likely that the other side will have an ICE vehicle parked there - there is nothing that states otherwise. It should be clearly marked that the entire pull-through lane is for EVs only, and that EVs that aren't pulling trailers should choose the other chargers, first.
