These are going to sell like hotcakes

Yes. And Rivian needs more service centers or new R2 customers will get frustrated more quickly than the R1 early adopters. It will be interesting to see how they scale to meet the mass market.

Yes and broader parts availability for independent shops and competent DIY owners to perform services that don’t require specialized knowledge and training.

They basically doubled service centers last year and have a further two full years before R2s start coming off the production line. And they’ll apply learnings from the launch of R1.

Do you own an R1 and have you had to try and get it serviced? I’m in the DC area. Yes, our service center is new and opened last year. It still takes 3mo to get an appointment. I’m not saying Tesla is any better, but they have (4) service centers in the DC metro.

Car owners who are used to just dropping their car off at their nearest dealer are in for a rude awakening. I’m super pro Rivian and wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one, but service is something they have to improve on before the R2 hits the road.

Same here, I am in Orange County and I have had to wait 4 months for a service appt. I had a trip scheduled a month ago and can't make my appointment and now I have to wait another 2 months. My fault but they said they can't reschedule me sooner. Meanwhile I am driving around with a windshield with a giant crack going across bottom to top, which has to go into the service center for replacement due to the front camera calibration. Makes me hesitant about getting another Rivian in the future.

One thing people don’t realize is many of the traditional auto manufacturers are also having problems with servicing EVs. The wait to get my wife’s id.4 serviced was longer than my Rivian service appointment I just had.

that doesn’t make a long wait for Rivian any more palatable, but the problem is far from isolated to just Rivian.

I think Rivian will get it sorted over time.

Tesla was like that in the beginning, I purchased mine in 2016, that was 4 years in for Tesla and scheduling appointments had long lead times similar to Rivian. Now after 12 years Tesla appointments are pretty reasonable, Rivian is only 2 years in, over time the service center buildout will help resolve the issue.

I completely agree. Rivian will get there. I think the key is better capacity before the the R2 deliveries.

No, the R2 will be a nice bunch of young kids. Nothing like us grumpy old entitled farts.

It took me a month to get an oil change in my old Audi. Service isn't all sunshine and rainbows with dealers either.

Tesla had HUGE service problems when they rolled out the Model 3 and again with the Model Y. Rivian should learn some lessons from Tesla's experience, but I also expect that there will be growing pains for Rivian no matter what they try to do. More service centers means more cash burn. It's a very delicate balance.

Oh I agree. We used to have this issue with our last Porsche as well.
