They have it. The body shells anyway. I doubt it will be standard equipment.

It has been mentioned as a technology that Rivian has always been evaluating but never confirmed for a production vehicle until today.

The big question for me is how this announcement will effect the desirability of the current R1. Clearly the sensor stack of the R1 as it exists today will have functionality limits without LiDAR. How long will Rivian go before adding LiDAR to R1?

There are two different versions of R2 in the wild. There is the prototype (only one exists as far as I am aware, it was white and then painted silver) that has been displayed at auto shows and Rivian showrooms. The second are the dozens of validation builds with the camo wraps.

The prototype does not have the LiDAR notch but the validation builds do.

The Lidar will come out on the gen 3 hardware at the end of 2026. So, launch and early R2s are already obsolete. DOA.

I don't know how Rivian is going to ship R2's without the lidar for the first half of the year. Who would buy a debut R2 knowing it will be shit before it's a year old?

I don't expect they will announce it for R1, but it looks fairly simple to integrate both the LiDAR and updated radars to R1. I'd expect to see it about the same time as R2 Gen3 hardware.
