MY numbers are slightly larger but, to me, R2 looks larger.

Can someone do an overlay of the two cars together? Extra points if you show the MY 3rd row version with the rear passengers heads sticking through the glass!

2024 Rivian R1S - 2023 Tesla Model Y
R2 looks more boxy so even if some measurements are similar or bigger with the Y I'd think the R2 is ultimately a tad larger in term of practical space. Will be interesting to see, yes this is a legit comparison. I always hated the Model Y - R1S comparisons as they're such different sized vehicles. Even the Model X feels noticeably smaller than an R1.

I've owned two Model Y LR and a model 3 Performance. Y really feels more like a taller sedan hatchback than an SUV. The R1S feels like a legit big 3 row SUV. Not sure if the R2 will feel more like an SUV or a taller sedan. I'd expect its more of an SUV feel but not sure. Less weight than an R1 and the lower center of gravity EV's have could make it feel more nimble.

Had that 3rd row on our first Y but now only have a 5 seater. Its useful if you have kids under 7 or so. Would have preferred to get it again - just wasnt available with the huge discounts I got on the second Y. But after that age of 7 or something, or with any adults its a laughably useless option. Is nice 5 seater has a storage compartment where the seats are.

RJ emphasized how hard they worked to make the interior feel spacious, including lowering the floor all the way to the battery pack. Taller than a MY. The only hit to interior space compared to MY is more ground clearance. I am pretty sure this will all work out significantly in the R2's favor as far as roominess. For storage, the frunk and under-trunk bonus storage will be hard to beat as well.

The R2 looks to have a lot more useable space inside for passengers, the family dog and gear. The larger rear door opening on the R2 will make it easier for both my 6'2" son, and 6'2" son-in-law to get in and out of the rear seat. The roof dips down severely on the Tesla Y, making it tough for tall people to get in and out of the rear. I feel the Tesla Y was labeled an SUV, simply because they know that is what sells. Even our dog would be able to in an out of the R2 easier with the larger rear door opening.

The roof height and body width of the R2 is spot on with our '23 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands, which currently gives me plenty of headroom at 6'4", and enough elbow room. The roof height is important for taller people to get in and out - especially behind the steering wheel, and the R2 looks great in this area. The R2 is quite a bit longer than the Bronco Sport, so it overcomes the shortcomings of that vehicle which is a very tight rear seat and limited fore-aft length in the rear cargo area.

The ground clearance of the R2 is amazing. An inch more than the Bronco Sport Badlands, which is on par with Subaru's more capable off-roaders. The Tesla Y is not even in the same league of the R2 in ground clearance, so driving in snow on or on forest roads to trailheads will be much easier in the R2.

I have just one remaining question of the R2: is it large enough to give us a spare tire option. Even a compact spare. "Adventure" vehicles are driven to areas without cell service. They've pared the weight down on modern tires (made them very thin) so much that they often "rip" open if damaged and a repair kit doesn't work.

From what I've seen, the R2 is actually a few inches shorter than a Bronco Sport, surprisingly.

I think you are looking at dimensions for the "Bronco" and not the "Bronco Sport". The Bronco is a completely different, very serious off-road, truck-based, 4WD vehicle. The Bronco Sport is a much smaller "adventure" vehicle.

Oh, you are talking height. When you said "shorter", I was thinking length.

Even so, the Bronco Sport's height includes the permanently mounted roof rails. The R2 cross bars are detachable and I believe they are not included in the vehicle height. The actual height of the roof, at the driver's door is within fractions of an inch between the two vehicles. I measured our Bronco Sport Badlands, (tallest version), and it was about 66.75 inches tall to the roof at the driver's door. Rivian cites a height of 66.9 inches. Since I am tall, my focus was to see how R2 compared with our Bronco Sport for getting in and out of the driver's seat. The very rear of the BS roof is raised and slightly taller.
