I have a trip coming up in a couple months and I’m a little paranoid that the valet is going to Ferris Bueller my truck. Do you think I should put it in snow mode and hope for the best, or take my wife’s Audi S car with a proper valet lock through the app?

Rockcrawl! Squishy pedal. They should add a valet/turtle mode that pretty much limits everything.

I'd go get a rental and take that.
The problem with that is I would have to drive a crappy rental car the 2 hours one way. It would be the most protective option for sure though.

I could Turo someone else’s Rivian and take that lol

I've used valet. Told them what to do, still couldn't figure it out. Took 10 minutes of just watching them struggle to ultimately achieve driving my truck in a straight line from 60 feet away while my life slipped away...

My axe to grind with mandatory valet: It ALWAYS takes longer and is more of a hassle than just letting us park our own stuff, just so they can get creative and wedge a few more cars into a parking lot, and I still have to pay THEM?

I appreciate the honesty but now I’m even more worried lol.

I was just sort of kidding. I am at a point somewhat in life, where I figure you have to use these things. I went thru my younger days over protecting everything I owned. Wanted everything to last forever and look new forever. Not an easy habit to break, but working on it!

I used to valet in college at a super ritzy place (ALL OF THE AWESOME CARS). To work where I worked you had to be an excellent valet. I once had to drive a prince to his girlfriends house (45 min away) in his murcielago with his girlfriend on his lap, fun times. This was pre uber, so I had to call a bunch of friends to get a ride back to the restaurant. The company that I worked for also had terrible valets at its less prestigious locations. That being said I will generally do whatever I can to avoid it, especially valets that park in offsite lots. Two weekends ago it was pouring down rain and I was so tempted to valet but found a paid self park lot about a block away.

TL;DR I would only valet as a last resort

I've used a valet with the Rivian once and it was okay but I know the guys and they insist on parking it up front - this was at a group of restaurants - so I could keep an eye on it anyway. Lots of lookie-loos but that's okay too.

If it was an unknown valet, I suspect I'd be a bit more cautious...

I used one. gave him one of the cards and explained it. he figured it out. my wife said I should make a laminated piece of paper with instructions (like don't raise but off seat when backing up) to hand to Valet. I thought that was a good idea and will likely do that.

I've used valet a few times with the key fob, at nice hotels that reassured me I was not the first Rivian they've come across. These hotels also charged the truck for me, which was nice. Make sure to check on it (via app) and lock the doors overnight though. On the most recent Tahoe overnight the doors were left unlocked and ice got in, had to defrost before the door handles would close completely.

The place where I’m valeting is at one of Hilton’s curio collection hotels. Fancy enough to be decent valets?

Im not so worried about keeping it new, more I’ve had a kid screw around in my Audi before when I took it for an oil change at the dealership. So it’s more being cautious about something that’s happened before.

I had one of the very first refreshed Model S's when I picked it up in June of 2021. And I live in L.A. Talk about freaking our valets...no stalks, no "shifter", and the yoke. It was hairy for a couple months for sure. I just got into the habit of standing there and waiting for the person attempt to drive, view their confounded expression, and then walked them through it. But it always went fine after. Being in L.A. there's little choice but to valet much of the time.

Park it yourself. Tell them your phone is the key and they’re not getting your phone.
