They're talking about model year... not year of production. Either way... moot speculation.
No, he literally said three years between 2022 Gen 1 and 2025 Gen 2, then extrapolated to Gen 3 in 2028, another 3 years.
This would follow the 3 year cycle (gen1 = 2022, gen2 = 2025, gen3 = 2028)
Rivian didn't use model years initially. Gen 1 vehicles were actual years, not model years. The 2022 models were shipped in 2022. The 2023 models were shipped in 2023. The Gen 2 models started shipping in mid 2024. Gen 1 and Gen 2 were only two years apart. And it's already been another two years since Gen 2 started shipping.

My point is it wasn't three years, it was two, so the whole premise of the post (3-year cycle) was wrong.

Gen 1 started with Model Year '22. Gen 2 started with Model Year '25. Gen 2 started shipping in 2024 as Model Year '25 car. Show me a Moroney Sheet for any gen 2 that showed 2024 in paperwork?

Gen 2 R1 was necessitated by cost control more than anything else. While components were upgraded (Moore's Law and evolving tech), it was done for cost cutting purposes. Naturally, quality of subsequent builds increased.

Now, things are bit different. Rivian is no longer R1 platform consumer vehicle company and there is an urgent focus on profitability, model expansion and brining already announced products (R2 Standard, R3, R3X) to the market, along with expanding the RCV beyond Amazon.

Would be surprising move if Rivian updated R1 gen 2 at 3 model year cycle. Most automakers are on 4 year cycle with cosmetic and minor mid-cycle update. One could argue that what Rivian calls gen 2 is a mid cycle update. If so, then we might see brand new. completely updated look R1 in 2028 or 2029 model year.

You didn't read what I said very carefully.
Gen 1 started shipping in 2022. Four years ago.
Gen 2 started shipping in 2024. Two years ago.
Two years apart, not three.

And I'm just sitting here laughing at the bickering. Especially when I already said I trusted "Search Assistant" results, which gave the incorrect answer.

R1 needs to be the cutting edge product and then the tech trickles down to R2, R3 etc. Need 800v or better, Meridian quality audio or better, lidar, etc. If RAD could do something like a ZR2 with lighter batteries on a R1T, lockers, etc, I would be in.

If a R2X will be on the heals and maybe pass an R1 light to light, thinking needs to be focused on why people spend 100k on a pickup. Hard to push the flagship at double the price with nothing but nicer interior bits and upgraded suspension. I love my R1 gen 1, but can’t find the value to pay more than my preorder pricing I got as the gap has not widened enough for me to buy another one. Yet

Rivian can walk and chew the gum at the same time. They are clearly focused on doing a lot right now. No reason they can't be working on gen 3 R1 along with R2 variants and R3. They have ambitions and RJ is fully in support of it.

Wouldn't surprise me if we saw a significant update this year tbh we should be hearing shortly on the 2027 model as the change usually occurs in the summer time. With the LFP version being phased out of the R1, I'm sure we might get some updates on the R1 to not have it seem to aged compared to the R2 once configurators are both lives on the website.

I wouldn't hold my breath but honestly wouldn't be surprised. They have surprised us plenty of time before. In the meantime, we can just let our imagination run wild.

Gen 1 actually started shipping to customers in late 2021 as I recall...

The same way R2 will be shipping to customers in June of 2026... 😅

Legally correct, but also misleading. They had only made like ~50 R1Ts in October of 2021, delivered less than 900 by the end of the year and the R1S was still just a twinkle in the eye. If any real non-employee customers got one in 2021 they may have been one of a kind.

Conceptual design - yes, production planning - most likely not.

Not a question of being able to develop multiple vehicles at the same time. Rather its a question of resource allocation. R

ivian is still spending more than they make and all the new funds coming in from outside are all at the expense of dilution of shareholders.

If they were profitable selling each vehicle, it might be different. RJ's support doesn't change the financial reality. Given how poor the last earnings call was, those of us who are shareholders, have seen the price dip under $14/share from near $17/share.

I want to see what the R1T RAD looks like. I won’t be able to afford it, but I still want to see it.

If they just redesigned the pack cooling from plate to ribbon cooling it would make charger so much faster even without going to 800v.

I hope they can retrofit HW3 into HW2 cars, like Tesla and Lucid did for a fee

(the infotainment chip upgrades I mean)

Faster charging speed and thermals would be great.
800v is insignificant if the thermals aren’t managed better. My Gen1 R1T will hit 200+ for only a short time until the battery heats up and throttles the charge curve.

Exactly. Will be interesting to see how R2 charges with the ribbon cooling. Per the Out of Spec YouTube video, the thermals on the R2 have been vastly improved and oversized. Doing that with the R1 would greatly improve charging.
