I'm in no rush to buy but my wife and I are pretty set on getting R1S Tri for me, R1S dual for her and I'm waiting for the gen 3 models. My best guess for when they will launch is either very late 2026 for 27MY or mid 2027 for 28MY.

They'll include the R2 improvements like lithium or sodium 12V, Rivian computers, 2nd gen heat pump, steering wheel at the very least.

I would like a 800V pack with faster charging, 48V low voltage system like in the Cybertruck, Lidar, but none of that is a deal breaker for me.

For those thinking this is going to be a long wait, I don't think it will be. The expected improvements (ported over from R2) are pretty straight forward upgrades and it makes sense from a cost perspective to streamline logistics and software development around common parts and also to stop paying Nvidia for the drive computers.

Rivian has internal product road maps, and it makes sense to say order enough gen 2 heat pumps for both R2 and R1, rather than continuing buying two SKUs, same for the drive computers and steering wheel etc. Then align the R1 refresh to begin after the R2 ramp as the older R1 parts are used up. That's why I don't think there's going to be a very long wait.

It’s already being worked on, I would imagine. RJ loves the R1. Nobody outside the building knows the full spec, but the obvious move is LG’s 4695 cell backed by Rivian’s 5‑year supply deal and the Arizona plant ramping up. 800V, updated compute, and a Max Pack in the 475‑mile neighborhood with a sub‑25‑minute 20–80 percent charge?

It’s still a halo vehicle, but the aero and weight are brutal, so you’re not getting meaningful range without something close to a 200 kWh pack. And honestly, how they plan to hit sub‑25‑minute 20–80 and 475 miles with a huge battery is a mystery because the thing is an aero brick and it isn't weight friendly. Huge battery keeps the cost up, so who knows.

Someone that works for Rivian said the 3rd gen R1s may have an option for retractable running boards.

800v, gen 3 autonomy, and a Two row R1S with roomier back seat, less weight, and more cargo. I'm in

switching to 800V is a total redesign of the electrical system. Might as well redesign the mechanical system too.
Yes and also no. This is all completely doable without re-doing the whole vehicle.

Example - Volvo just updated the platform that the EX90 and Polestar 3 use to 800v. The vehicles remained identical. This was also done a year after the release of the EX90.

It is a significant update for sure but one well worth doing and they can keep the current R1 platform with some tweaks. The R1 still looks great and can stay relevant with some tweaks without doing a complete redesign.

I wonder if they will redesign the heat pump location. It was a retrofit and does not appear to have proper sound insulation. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Gen 3?

Honestly, I'm hoping gen3 comes with one of the new battery technologies that the chinese EV's have started getting.

Under 10 minutes for 400 miles of range sounds amazing, or almost 650 miles of range from a full pack sounds like a great fit for the Rivian.

But yeah - gen3 should probably be more than just a sensor upgrade. It's a chance to pick up the next generation of tech.

When will the R1 get the Gen 3 hardware?
While there's no harm in asking such a question, I suspect 99%+ of the forum members have no clue, and the few exec employees who might know aren't going to chime in. RJ has already clarified that both ramping up R2 production and autonomy are priorities. Yes, there might be an R2T, an R2X, an R3, etc. on the horizon, but none are showing up soon, and it's clear to me that Rivian needs to show cash flow.

I want to drive a Gen3 with 800V & LIDAR, so does everyone else, but even if released today, it's unlikely a Gen 3 R1 would crush sales so much that Rivian would suddenly start making a profit. This is probably the #1 reason that Rivian can't afford to make this a priority; the R1 will always be a premium vehicle that most Americans can't afford and will never garner Model Y like sales.
