What technique do you use to charge 2 EVs

My wife and I are going to start with the R2, but it is very likely we might add the Subaru Trailseeker also.

What strategy/technique do you use when you have to manage charging 2 electric vehicles.



Do you have one of those smart splitter boxes, just use one charger and swap cables manually, other?

I was hoping to get some good ideas from those of you who have tackled this before.

Initially, we had one 14-50 plug and I charged my lesser-driven EV via slow 15A 120v plug.

When we moved, we had two Tesla wall chargers installed, one on either side of the garage.

We had two PHEV's for a while. The cable on our charger is long enough to reach both garage parking spots. So we just used that one charger for both vehicles. Sometimes we parked both in the garage and other times we had one in the driveway and ran the cable under the door. It took about 2 hours and 15 mins to charge them from 0-100%.

It will depend on how much driving is done on each. We had 2 for the last 3.5 years, have 3 now that we got an R2. We do not need to charge them everyday so we just use the one charger and charge one at a time.

If you find that they each will need to be charged daily you have a couple of options. You can run separate lines for 2 chargers or purchase chargers out there that can automatically load share on a single line. 2 I can think of capable of this are some Tesla models and Emporia.

The answer really depends on your house. Parking spots, electrical panel, ease of installation, etc. If you have a breaker panel with extra capacity that is close to the parking places I would install the two highest capacity EVSE’s I could. Otherwise, install one and plan on taking turns charging. Only drivers that put 150+ miles/day on each car would not be able to take turns charging.

I started with one EV then added another. I accomplished this via a tesla universal wall connector that lets you daisy chain from the UWC to another wall connector. It then power shares.

Had I thought that I would get a second EV soon, I'd probably have used this instead. Grizzl-e Duo

We have 5 EV's, for each family member. Only 1 charger. It has worked well but max commute is about 75 miles. Each vehicle needs charged a out every 4th day.

this is a few ago now, but started with a NEMA 14-50 plug with a Chargepoint EVSE. Then added a hardwired Rivian EVSE. Makes life so much easier. I didn't have to worry about when to use what and I don't have to worry about dragging the cord across the garage.

Its the little things if your budget allows for it

We have power sharing wall chargers with 2 EVs, but we found we really only need one. If installed center of a 2 car garage it works well since charging either vehicle doesn't block the other.

We now have 3 drivers in the house with 3 EVs and it's still sufficient for our use case, eventually you develop a routine and cadence to charging that works.

I have one tesla wall charger 48amps. The cord can reach both sides of the garage. It is very rare that both cars need charging at the same time so it hasn't been an issue. We take turns using the same charger.

Typically, our cars are charged 1-2x per week each..

We installed a pair of EVSEs that do "load sharing". One 60A circuit, two 40A EVSEs (have since upgraded to 48A) that send full power to one EV if it's the only one drawing power, then split down to half-total-power if both are trying to draw maximum load.

Even that is mostly overkill for instances where someone forgets to plug in. We could easily get away with just switching from one vehicle to the other the vast majority of the time; or one on a 240V 40A and the other on a 120V 15A "household outlet."

One charger, alternate charging, none issue. We have a Y and an R1T. I charge the Y in the evening and plug in the R1 before I go to bed. Never been an issue based on the difference in daily/weekly milage between them.

Our house is on a 200A supply: We have a pair of Wallbox pulsars, and a powermeter that ensures the total load in the home doesnt go about 180A. As we charge off peak, most of the time our chargers are both running at 48A each (they are on separate 60A circuits) - but they dip down if the Dryer, AC, or Oven etc create sufficient load. Super nice setup, and couldn't be happier with them. I'm actually considering adding a third EVSE on the ourside of our garage - so we don't need to pull in everytime to charge

I have one Rivian wall charger hardwired for 40amp charging and one Nema 6-20 plug in the garage left over from my Volvo XC90 charger that gets 16amps. I charge on the 40 amp charger and my wife charges on the 16amp charger. She does not drive over 40 miles per day so it works for us.

I, like some others, have 2 Tesla chargers daisy chained off of one 60A breaker. They power share when needed. If you need to charge both cars frequently, a similar setup with daisy chained chargers is the way to go. If you don't, a single charger that can reach both cars works also (and is least expensive).
