Is this for specifically when pet comfort (ac on) mode isn’t an option.

There are times when it's cool enough that Pet Comfort mode is not needed, but warm if all the windows are closed.

So then it would be good to use pet comfort mode?

With our mechanical retracting hatch latch, I’m not sure that extension is gonna work well. In any case, even if the truck does lock, I wouldn’t consider it secure.

I only run pet comfort mode when I need to. (It does, after all, use energy. And I prefer to conserve.

A slightly open, but locked hatch is not completely secure, but much more so than a completely open in. If it needs to be secure than I use pet comfort mode.

It won't use much energy if it's not needed. Set the temperature and forget it. If you spend $40 imon a latch, you will never recover that money spent on charging(likely). It better to use the mode than risk it. Glass roof warms up the cabin surprisingly fast.
