Value proposition question - at what distance do you consider your ICE over EV?

None for me. Been on 2 5k mile trips in EV's and were great. Usually about 1k round trip that also have been great. Last 2 years the exponential amount of new chargers has made it to where planning isnt like it used to be. Also, Im getting older and having a 25 - 30 minute stops over 2.5 hours has been great to make me not so tired when getting to destination

Its just which EV works best for those on trip. If only a few M3 for effiecency. It the whole crew R1S. If camping R1T.

I use ICE for track day and offroad as dont mind getting dings on the Bronco.

This is precisely what keeps me in ICE vehicles. Road trips are just so much easier and so much quicker. The vast majority of my road trips, the idea is to get to my destination, wasting as little time as possible. Less time on the road equals more time enjoying myself at my destination. Maybe I'd feel differently if I was retired, but that's still a few years away. I really want to see ranges increase and charging times decrease before I'll ever road trip an EV again. I think two hour (four hours round trip) would be my absolute limit to even consider EV. Anything more is ICE only for sure.

Our '23 R1S with 20" has a usable range of about 250 miles between charges. One of my daughters goes to school almost exactly 400 miles away and we take the Rivian each trip. We can get there with one charging stop of about 30 minutes - about 15 minutes longer than it would take in our Highlander. Yes - it would only take 3-4 minutes to gas up the Highlander, but we would be there for 15 minutes for bio breaks and snacks anyway (that's where the 15-minute EV premium comes in). The Rivian is just so much more comfortable that there's no question which vehicle we'll take.

On multi-hour trips we have to stop at least once anyway, so what's the big deal? We just stop where we charge. My days of driving 6 hours non-stop between gas breaks are over...I'm too old to put myself through that any longer.

We traded in our last ICE vehicle for a second EV last year, not long after taking a 2600 mile trip in my R1T towing a Uhaul trailer for half of it. That trip went so smoothly, both with and without the trailer, that even my spouse who had dealt with some range anxiety previously decided she was comfortable being full-time EV drivers now.

I only have my R1T and my husband an escalade IQ. The only ice vehicle in our family is my youngest son's crosstrek. All that to say- all our trips are EV (or we fly).

For us it's not a matter of time or distance. The only question is how deep the water is.

Anything over 43" and I have no choice but to get in the ICE, but in practice the transition point is usually a bit over 12".

**The only thing I own that uses gasoline is a boat.

I have a 15 year old ranch truck as I call it…if the trip is far enough that I’d have to charge the Rivian away from the house, I take it. Not because I want to, but because convenience.

Interesting the responses, great topic. I’m a little shocked how many are 100% EV houses and use them on longer trips.

My household is not just pure EV, but our only vehicle, and has been since 2022. It's been so nice not having to go to gas stations (unless the bug build-up on the windshield has gotten really bad on a roadtrip) for anything.

We did a 3,500 mile road trip thru Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah & Southern Idaho before coming home in our Model Y (before we got rid of it and moved to our R1T) with no issues.

Edit: To contribute, I've taken multiple 2k mile trips in R1T with no problems, but, as is the consensus, the timeline is what clinches whether I take the truck or ICE.

We've been a 100% EV household since 2020. Take a yearly 1600-mile round trip to see my mom and stepdad in South Carolina.

If one is an EV only household, the question doesn't apply. There is no alternative or option to take ICEV or EV.

When we bought our R1S in 2023, I was all-in for only EV going forward. Since then, I've done 180 and now believe in having the right tool for the right job. I have bought an ICE sports car for the weekend toy last September.

For the daily driver, I still believe EVs are the best tool for the job. Just not for everything. We have 2 of each and like using the right kind of vehicle for the particular need.

Absolutely agree. It is very subjective because its based on my own criteria for my own needs.

It's the right tool for the right need for me. It is not, just as EV is not, the right answer for everyone.
