The current wall charger is just a rebranded liteon one - I suspect they will likely do the same (contract out to an OEM) and just do the packaging.

Rebranding/OEM sourcing absolutely makes the most sense at this point .... but RJ has talked for years about vertical integration at Rivian, and my fuzzy memory seems to recall him mentioning this specifically about V2H...
There's not enough money to be made by Rivian on their own EVSE to justify design, certification, build, stock, and sell. Which, as portdirect said, is exactly what they did with Lite-On. Lite-On did all of the actual work and Rivian probably just committed to ordering a certain minimum quantity.

Even after the R2 launch Rivian simply won't sell enough of the chargers to get to the scale needed to make them profitably when compared to the existing manufacturers in that space. So it makes far more business sense to just sell someone else's box as is or have it white labeled. And I would argue that the former is smarter since any issues with it become that vendor's problem to solve and the customer doesn't blame Rivian for something they can't control or fix.

But also as Zoidz points out RJ has talked about Rivian's desire for vertical integration. By white labeling someone else's box Rivian is not going to be able to do anything special with that box. Now what they might actually do that is any way different from the rest of the industry, and whether people will buy Rivian's box instead of anyone else's, and whether all of that that's worth the juice are all good questions. That I don't have answers to.

FWIW I bought the Rivian EVSE because I had store credits expiring and figured getting it for $50 was better than buying a different one for full price and wasting the credits on stuff I didn't need (sweatshirts?). But in retrospect I probably should not have bought it and instead got a Wallbox or Emporia instead. If only because they have OCPP support and Rivian's seemingly doesn't (even though it's listed in the manual).

The lack of progress on V2L/H/G, at least in the US, was probably because everyone was waiting for a formal standard in order to provide a universal solution that would also facilitate smooth permitting and approvals; NEMA published such a standard, NEMA EVSE 40011-2024, on January 16, 2025. If people want to pay $129 then they can get it from NEMA's website

This brief overview article provides some background, one of the authors is from NEMA.
I have said before, and will say again, Rivian has no intention of building a bidirectional charging system, it’s all marketing hype to trick us into buying.

My post was pointing out that the industry in general seems to have been waiting for a standard, my post wasn't specific to Rivian. Enphase has also been promising bidirectional charging capability as part of their solar + energy storage solution for a while, with nothing coming to market so far, probably because they too were waiting for a standards based solution and knew a standard was coming.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "Rivian has no intention of building a bidirectional charging system?" Certainly the R1 platform is already capable of bidirectional charging, as demonstrated by Sigenergy and discussed in this thread. Time will tell if Rivian decide to offer their own bidirectional charger, either 3rd party badged or developed in house. Personally I would be more likely to source one from a solar + battery installer for the best system integration in the home solution.

There are a couple V2H units available now that work with Rivian.

Rivian V2H support but this is in the works per an interview with RJ (YT link) . Looks like it may be 20+ kW (240v 80a) too! FYI, he said Gen 2 & Gen 1.

Well I hope you didn't buy a Rivian just for V2H.

V2H is a total distraction outside of Rivian's well publicized plan of development. Not going to be until way after R2 and R3(x).

Do tell.. while I see a couple of available devices, it remains unclear if they will work out of the box with Rivians. Do you have direct experience or knowledge of any of these devises working with Rivians?

I'm curious about this as well. I'm more interested in V2L (I basically want a box that will give me a 3,000W inverter), but I believe Rivian will have to do something in software to enable bi-directional power transfer through the charge port.
