The current wall charger is just a rebranded liteon one - I suspect they will likely do the same (contract out to an OEM) and just do the packaging.
There's not enough money to be made by Rivian on their own EVSE to justify design, certification, build, stock, and sell. Which, as portdirect said, is exactly what they did with Lite-On. Lite-On did all of the actual work and Rivian probably just committed to ordering a certain minimum quantity.Rebranding/OEM sourcing absolutely makes the most sense at this point .... but RJ has talked for years about vertical integration at Rivian, and my fuzzy memory seems to recall him mentioning this specifically about V2H...
Even after the R2 launch Rivian simply won't sell enough of the chargers to get to the scale needed to make them profitably when compared to the existing manufacturers in that space. So it makes far more business sense to just sell someone else's box as is or have it white labeled. And I would argue that the former is smarter since any issues with it become that vendor's problem to solve and the customer doesn't blame Rivian for something they can't control or fix.
But also as Zoidz points out RJ has talked about Rivian's desire for vertical integration. By white labeling someone else's box Rivian is not going to be able to do anything special with that box. Now what they might actually do that is any way different from the rest of the industry, and whether people will buy Rivian's box instead of anyone else's, and whether all of that that's worth the juice are all good questions. That I don't have answers to.
FWIW I bought the Rivian EVSE because I had store credits expiring and figured getting it for $50 was better than buying a different one for full price and wasting the credits on stuff I didn't need (sweatshirts?). But in retrospect I probably should not have bought it and instead got a Wallbox or Emporia instead. If only because they have OCPP support and Rivian's seemingly doesn't (even though it's listed in the manual).
