I think they are saying that you have to wait at least 60 days after the initial purchase before you can upgrade.

I suspect this mandatory delay probably came from their lawyers as an attempt to avoid claims that they are defrauding the government with regards to tax credit price caps and vehicle values for registration tax calculations.

For example if Rivian sold a software locked quad for $75,0000 and then expected you to pay another $75,000 ten minutes later to unlock it, that would(or at least should) be viewed as a single $150,000 purchase from the perspective of tax credit qualification or registration calculation.

But if you unlock it 2 years later it looks a lot less like a trick. The lawyers probably decided that 60 days was enough to make the $5,000 add on look like a legitimately separate purchase.

I understand that aspect. But Rivian changed their prices and a lot of people got a steal at 75k price point too. If Rivian wants to make profit, they should lower the price to entice people to upgrade.

With Pre-order voucher pricing, I got my configuration at $71k.. Such a great value. Trade in today is $67k but an equal build would be $96k. ?

Yeah that's incredible! I missed the deadline by 20 days.. so I ended up paying full price for our R1S.. but it's still worth it!

Not saying it would be permanent, but a limited time offer to those who can upgrade now, give them a window of like 30 days, at a lower price. Otherwise, price goes back to 5k after that 30 day window.

Then everyone would bitch and moan that it ended after only 30 days, or “I didn’t realize the 30 days included weekends”, or etc etc. 5k is the right price.

If it was cheaper, they'd have to lower the price of the performance dual motors in inventory and in the configurator. Who would pay $5,000 for one in inventory or configure it as a $5,000 option if they can simply buy it after the fact for less money? I'm not at all surprised it's the same price.

The performance pack is only $3,500 right now.

Sure, list price is $5,000 but get an extra $1,500 off on a dual-max performance (total $4,500 off) vs. a dual-max non-performance ($3,000 off).

So if you want to be upset about paying $5K for the Performance upgrade you should have been upset for the last month or two already.

But you don't have to wait 60 days post-purchase to buy FSD for $8K on a Tesla that's under the cap for the tax credit.

I got super lucky, because I cancelled my pre-order when the jacked the price only for them to reinstate pre-order price, then held on long enough for it to be a voucher and they launched the dual motor and reduced battery capacity to save a few bucks

Saw the video from Rivian Trackr. Cool you can enter in after market tires for any wheel but fascinating it doesn’t mention the size. So if you have the AT wheels and add an all terrain after market tire it defaults to 275/65r20 regardless of size? I have all terrain 276/50r20 so… not sure which I should enter. My truck already is calibrated for the terrible mileage I get— 100% shows 287

Most people want to roll the $5k into their loan or lease. Not everyone has $5k burning a hole in their pocket.

Different lawyers, slightly different facts, and different clients with different risk tolerance can easily explain two companies making different decisions in similar circumstances.

Also, when Tesla came up with their policy, the federal government was considerably more EV tax credit friendly then it is now. Even the same lawyer and the same client might implement a different policy today than they would have come up with 2 years ago.

And on top of that, at least for the moment Tesla is effectively beyond the reach of federal scrutiny. It seems almost impossible imagine that Elon would give Trump permission for anyone in the federal government to sue Tesla/Elon. It would be quite foolish for anyone else to look at what Tesla's doing and think that is evidence that it's safe for them to do the same thing.

It all adds up to a situation where it should not be surprising that Rivian and Tesla would end up with different policies.

I guess they are hoping people use their tax returns for this? This makes zero sense, just always have it available for the random impulse buy.

My suggestion for an "basic" dual motor owners, save the $5k Performance is a cool feature with very little real world value.

If you are getting anything close to $5K tax returns you either should not be spending money on a Rivian or you desperately need help to set up proper withholding

Did the update, fixed the wheels to the corresponding wheels I have one (which is my winter set uo with 20's) the new wheels now reflect on the car which is awesome! but they do not reflect on the app. Anyone know is this will eventually change?
