Rivian needs to allow for this to be disabled.
I had this issue backing up my boat. Although I figured out the cause at the time, it didn’t help as I couldn’t find any way to change it.
Particularly when I’m backing up the empty trailer into the water, I like to sit up to see it… and I couldn’t without the automatic parking. I even tried sitting up with right knee on the seat and using left leg on the gas/go pedal — that didn’t work.
I found this very frustrating.
Have you tried phone books?

I can’t believe this is a problem for the majority of Americans. ? ? ?
Funny lol. But tbh I doubt the type of American too fat to lift their ass off a seat are the same people buying R1Ts and going camping lmao.

I had this happen the other day, my seatbelt was off though so I'm assuming that's why

I've also seen modern cars automatically go into park if you try to drive with the door open. I assume Rivian probably does that too.

Does anyone know if these garbage nanny "features" are legally required now? Could Rivian turn it off or add a disable button if they wanted to?

I can confirm that this occurs in drive as well. I was stopped at a light, undid my seatbelt, and leaned over to grab something off the passenger side floor and the truck went into Park.

I can also confirm that shifting into gear with the door open will shift immediately back to park.

No idea about legal requirements.

If your seatbelt is buckled it will not shift into park, assuming the door is closed. There 3 things the truck is monitoring:
  1. Is seatbelt buckled?
  2. Is the door closed?
  3. Does the seat sense someone is in the drivers seat?
If 2 out of the 3 is true, it will not shift into park. This is a safety precaution since there is no ignition. You can easily get out of the truck without putting it into park. As soon as the seatbelt is no longer engaged and the seat doesn’t sense your in it, it will shift into park. This annoyance is much better that watching your R1T roll down the street or boat dock with nobody in it. Just make sure to buckle your seatbelt and it shouldn't be an issue.

This is not completely true. If you have door closed with seatbelt on, and lift off the seat in reverse, the truck will go in Park. As mentioned before, this is a problem when reversing truck with a trailer (and will happen even if door closed and seatbelt on).
Rivian needs to allow disabling of this.

In my Tesla it's only if you aren't buckled up.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that if you have your seatbelt buckled and the door closed, the truck will NOT go into park if you lift off the seat. This applies to moving forward or in reverse. Don’t believe me? Go try it.

Almost every time I am in reverse the truck will automatically go into park even while the truck is moving. Has anyone else experienced this?
Same here. I have had the issue both going forward and reverse. I too made sure to be on the seat and not lift off. Happened multiple times when my wife backed up the vehicle.

thats a little overkill. they could adjust it to give you a warning and then engage park in 3-4 seconds if you dont comply.

Sounds like a door isn't closed all the way.
