You can't stop something that you never started.
That's just semantics. Although they hadn't started, they canceled their plans and scheduled events.

I'll rephrase.

No company, other than Rivian, has canceled all of their planned demo events/test drives until further notice.

Once again you have problem with your statement. They canceled all demo events, but since they had never scheduled any test drives, they have canceled them.

Their website specifically states they are not giving test rides or drives due to Covid. Their own website says they will offer them once covid allows them to safely do it. I don't know how that can be any more clear.

Whether you want to argue over whether the test drives are canceled, delayed, suspended, or whatever is just ridiculous. It is irrelevant to the point that covid is not preventing any other brand from doing test drives, but Rivian states on their website covid is preventing them from doing it at this time.

The only reason you can't test drive an Air or Hummer is because they don't yet exist.
Agreed. In fact I have a Hummer reservation and my dealership is getting one of the early trucks just for the purpose of test drives. I expect to be able to see one and drive one before the end of this year.

I don't disagree, but what bothers me is they had extra time and still haven't articulated to us what the plan is. I bet many people would be happier to wait if Rivian would say "once XYZ criteria are met, we are going to do ABC."
Not trying to be antagonistic but this appears to not be true. if you think about it. XYZ Criteria is in May once the guide training is complete. ABC is they will start reaching out see below;

”Guide introductions will begin in May once training is complete, starting with Launch Edition preorder holders first. Introductions will be one to one, so it will take time for everyone to meet their Guide. When your Guide reaches out, the final ordering process begins. From configuration questions to scheduling delivery — and all your adventures once your Rivian arrives — your Guide will be with you.”

I thought that was pretty clear and seems like since it is one on one they will probably be somewhat in the order of where you are in the queue. Might not be the details you want but it is a specific timeline with set criteria and a resulting action.

They have also stated and confirmed a couple of times they are still on track to start LE R1T deliveries in June and LE R1S deliveries in August. The above communication was just giving more detail.

Comparing the availability of test drives thru a company with established dealerships where all they have to do is ship a demo unit to facilitate the test drive is much different than setting up an event where you need to rent space, get permits and insurance, send both vehicles and the personnel, put them up in hotels, etc.
Many areas of the country flat our prohibited that kind of "event" (some still do), others had/have severe restrictions. People disagree on the necessity of those measures, but Rivian is not in a position to set up events in defiance of local rules.

None of that is TEST DRIVES, which is the topic of the thread.

I guess we just read between the lines differently. I feel the test drives fall in between the configuration questions and scheduling delivery portion of the statement....

I fully expect that information to start coming out in May when they start reaching out. You can trust that I am really no more patient than any of you but am trying to work on that while I wait for my number to come up.

What are my options to take delivery?
For owners in the United States and Canada, our focus will be delivering the R1T or R1S directly to your home for added convenience and comfort — you can ask a Rivian Delivery Specialist for a walkthrough of your new vehicle or explore on your own time through a guided digital orientation. We’ll share more about additional delivery options in your area as we approach production and start accepting orders in early 2021.

I just noticed this I am guessing this is Rivian Guide + Something interactive and super cool.

Yeah, good point. I assumed it would be videos on the display or something, but that was before the guides were announced.

I'm curious how many LE reservation holders on this forum would require a test drive even if it meant delaying delivery? I'm emotionally committed at this point and will finalize my order sight unseen if necessary... however that does not mean I will accept a flawed vehicle if delivered to my house with loose trim paint damage etc. That being said hopefully Rivian will announce regional viewing events continuing in May.

My youngest vehicle is 2006....so I would probably buy without a test drive (prefer not to) but the ride/handling of the air suspension is probably like riding on a cloud vs the 3 busted suspensions, bushings etc of my ol' jalopies.

It depends on what they do to get us better idea on the colors. I would really like to see them all before final confirmation of my order. I don’t necessarily need to drive the truck, but I would like to see it.

I don't think I need a test drive so much as I would like to sit in the vehicle and see how the car seats fit for my kids. We are moving from an expedition max, so we need to be comfortable with the more limited space.

I think I am good, getting ElCap/BlackMountain so colors are not an issue. I'm somewhat vertically challenged so space is not an issue. I have no doubt it will feel and drive at worst the same as my Model S and I am good with that. 5 years to iron out any issues based on the warranty.

Let me know who to make the check out to and when you are dropping it off....
