It hurts no one, it's a software unlock. It's an OTA. No hardware or labor needed.
Except Rivian who is giving away an upgrade that others will pay for. You can't expect a company that's trying to achieve profitability to give away things.

I'm of the camp that if it's a SW only feature to unlock and the customer is willing to pay for it, then it makes sense (if feasibly possible) for Rivian to offer it for a price. Rivian is in business to show value to shareholders and constant freebies aren't profitable.

Additionally, I believe that if you want that upgrade, then it should cost more to go the update route than simply buying it in the first place -- after all, someone has to spend time to create the software update, test it, push it to the specific vehicle requesting it, process payments for it, etc.

I know they will offer an option to upgrade from dual motor to performance in the future, but you wil have to pay for it.. probably 5k ..
I would think/hope they do the same for standard+ to unlock to large/max battery.. whatever its on.

I have the standard+.. I got it so I could get the tax credit. I would definitely pay for the performance upgrade.. I dunno if i would pay 5k to unlock 40 or so miles though.

Tesla offered to unlock the remainder of my battery for 2k about 18 months after my purchase.

I purchased a Model S 60 that was a 75kWh battery software locked. The vehicle was 7k less than a 75 so I thought the 2k was well worth it. They also changed the software and exterior badging as well to reflect the model was a 75. Added 5k to the bluebook value once completed, I am happy I did it.
Yeah, if Rivian did something similar I would probably opt for it. I'm curious how many standard/standard+ R1's with the SW-locked battery are out there.

The new large must be the same software locked max pack the old standard+ was.

They've shown the new large as 109kwH, the standard+ is 121kWH usable.

Old standard and standard+ is software locked larger. Now the new standard is LFP, the new large is a software locked max
