Squeaking noise (from brakes?) when car slows down on regen

Service appointment already made for end of January.

Gen 1 R1S LE. There has been what sounds like brake squeaking/squealing noise when the car slows down, even with just regen without me pressing on the brake pedal. Doesn’t matter if the weather is warm or cold. I thought letting off the accelerator pedal does NOT engage the mechanical brakes? I’m not even sure if it’s the brake that’s making the noise.

In an update sometime in about the last year, Rivian added "blended braking" which is where the car will automatically apply the brakes as needed in addition to pure regen. This option is on by default however you can turn it off. The thought here is that if regen is limited for some reason (battery is cold, you've been going down hill), the car will behave consistently by applying the hydraulic brakes - typically the rear brakes (which are the smaller ones).

I've turned this feature off as I prefer to know when my brakes are being applied because: 1) blended braking will increase brake wear which is expensive to replace; and 2) slight application of the physical brakes will create heat and reduce overall braking capability.

When you say it doesn't matter whether the temperature is warm or cold, what is the battery temperature in these cases?

Tesla would reduce regen when the battery was cooler than 67F, or when it was almost full. It was annoying since the car would drive differently. I love that the brakes are blended in when you don't have full regen. They will last longer if you use them.

Even with the new blended braking turned off the friction brakes are still blended at low speeds.

some have reported the inside pads were significantly worn down.

it could also be the calipers just need some lubrication. It’s hard to say without seeing the truck.

Thanks for the replies.

I turned off the blended braking and could tell that the noise is from the friction brake. The noise is only there when I apply a certain amount of pressure on the brake pedal. No noise if I brake harder or lighter. I’ll have the SC take a look at them.

Another good option is to drive then put your truck in neutral and jump on the brakes from about 20 miles an hour a couple times / there could just be some buildup that you need to clean off, definitely a possibility and could save a service center trip.

Mine makes the noise when slowing down from about 50 mph and above. I hope Rivian is not gonna charge me for this because technically brakes are wearable items?

I did a few hard braking hoping it would fix this. The noise is still there. ?

I had the exact same thing happen to me this afternoon and I’m guessing this (described in the thread) is the cause.

Rivian is towing my R1S to the Austin service center tomorrow. I’ll let you know the verdict, in case it helps you.

I have blended regen/brake off and hear a slight squeak but usually under 5-10mph… I’m wondering if the vehicle is applying braking regardless of setting… However, that video is scary that sounds like a locked caliper and vehicle should not be driven or could experience a catastrophic failure or even possibly a friction fire!
Keep us updated after your appointment.

Also to note, if you use cruise when the vehicle slows for traffic or decline it blends the brakes with regen with no way to disengage this setting…

You can try to argue. Depends on age and mileage but most likely if your out of the 1yr 12k mi “adjustment” warranty brake pad will unfortunately be a customer pay job….based on others who have had this issue.

Mine is just the typical brake noise.
Don’t mean to speculate but I remember there was a recall on a front suspension component a while back. Not sure if it was the improperly torqued screw recall back in 2022. Some owners reported hearing a noise and found out there was metal to metal rubbing.
