I just bought my wife vw id4, that thing has CarPlay and software is Abysmal. I’ll take the Rivian approach any day.
Can you give a few details about the problems? I have a 2016 Nissan Leaf whose battery was really degraded by the heat this summer in Texas. I am trying to figure out what to do if I end up having to replace the Leaf and I was considering an ID 4.

R1S - April 2021 preorder
When is the update coming ?
Probably end of this week. If you look at the tracker, it’s about 5-10 days on average from internal to external.

You’ll get it when you get it.

It is just shocking that Rivian has not included an egg timer, ear hair depilator, or an automated dog walking application so my car can take the pooch for a crap. I hate this car and should never have bought it.

In all seriousness, I find the Rivian interface and sw to be way above average. We also have an Ioniq 6 and the quality of the Rivian software is leagues ahead. Ditto over our previous Chevy Bolt. The convenience of access to the Apple app on the Hyundai is (for me) far outweighed by the cludgy visual confusion of the rest of the Hyundai software. The Rivian interface is vastly superior and intuitive in every other way.

There is some subjectivity to how any of us relate to software. But it is hard to understand the intensity of some of the whining about the Rivian interface. Most of us had the opportunity to test drive the R1 before buying. If the sw was a deal breaker that should have been clear then. It took me 4 minutes in the VW ID4 to know there was no way I could tolerate the software.

of course my truck is going in for repairs on the 23rd. Lady rolled into me at a light, new tailgate. I'll likely miss halloween mode..... :(
Same. Going in for service in a week. Won't get back for at least a week from then.

It has wireless carplay and wireless charging. It seamlessly switches to CarPlay so that’s good. But the CarPlay maps doesn’t calculate charging stops. You’ll either have to stick inbuilt map(which is not great, old German vehicle style map) or use ABRP offline. Driving is fun, we got Pro S and it has some nice comfort features. The software the car uses is non-intuitive and have dig through bunch of menus to get to things. We got the RWD, the regen even on B isn’t that strong and you can’t come to a full stop on regen only. One Big Pro, AC works amazing, might be even better than my R1S.

Thank you. That software stacks sounds terrible. :p Don't think my wife would appreciate digging through menus to find things.

The kicker is they don’t do OTA update, you’ll have to go to the dealership when you get a notification for an update. Btw, I did find it comfortable to ride and drive( than MY) and it has massaging seats too. Take it for a test drive.

The programming and testing can't be that hard, and this is coming from someone who runs a software development team.
How much regulation does your software development team have to follow? FMVSS is quite a monster.

Apple Maps can do this but it is up to the OEM to make that software integration. Ford and Porsche are the only ones that actually do this right now. As you’ve noticed, VW has had a lot of issues with their software.

This is why I sound like such a fanboy defending Rivian's software. The way some people talk it is clear they've never actually had a vehicle with truly bad software. Rivian's is better than most overall.

Our Lightning has very good infotainment software AND AA/CarPlay so it's not like it's an either/or situation.

It must have improved from 2020 then because the top tier explorer I had was laggy and unusable software wise. The native nav's boot up time was measured in minutes for example.
